As a teen I went through a “soul phase”, inspired by Boyz II Men and The Pasadenas. I’m not so ashamed of that, but this phase featured pretty heavy rotation of Michael Bolton’s “Time, Love & Tenderness”.

My sister owned it and I took it off her hands, giving her The Shamen’s “En-Tact” and De La Soul’s “…Is Dead” in return.

I’m rapidly going off what I like to call “intentional” music (rehearsed, written music) because I find it too contrived and it seems like all self-proclaimed musicians are just doing it for attention and to satisfy their ego and I don’t want to facilitate that.

Instead I have been listening to what I like to call “accidental” music (e.g. field recordings of nature) and “functional” music (e.g. sound effects compilations, foley recordings, some soundtrack recordings such as the recent Twin Peaks Anthology Resource).

I knew what New Order (or Barney at least) looked like so for me it was not understanding why they had decided to change their look (the concept of parody was obviously beyond me when I was 13).

@1101010 I had the same thing with the You Can Call Me Al video but my dad soon corrected me by telling me that Paul Simon was “the little bloke in the background moving musical instrument around”.
