I really wish him and Mogis would work together again. His production style always brought the best out of the material and his lap steel playing is always perfectly in tune with the tracks.

Exactly. That’s what a meant about the guitar noodling on the new tracks, it sounds like someone playing over it but Mogis’ playing always intertwined with the songs perfectly.

I remember at the Royal Albert hall the lap steel interlude in poison oak made the crowd go wild, quite a surreal moment

Talking of full band Conor, we all know Outer South is a bit poor, mainly down to that fateful moment when one of the band said ‘Conor, how about we all write song for the album too!’ and he was too nice to say no.

Well I re-tracked Outer South taking out those songs and putting in some from the One of my Kind rarities comp (basically the original ones off Gentleman’s Pact EP and couple of others).

I now really like it, here’s some great songs on there:

Side One:
One of My Kind
Slowly (Oh So Slowly)
Gentleman’s Pact
Cabbage Town
Synesthete Song
To All The Lights In The Window
White Shoes

Side Two:
Spoiled
Nikorette
Ten Women
Roosevelt Room
Breezy
I Got The Reason #2
White Shoes (reprise)

Breezy and gentlemens pact are definitely better than the album, white shoes is good though

Yeah they’re both great, Breezy is one of his best I think. Roosevelt room is great too for a change of pace.

Gentleman’s Pact is one of my favourite Oberst tracks under any guise.
There was a live version doing the rounds before the EP came out that was just perfect.

Napalm is really growing on me especially the chorus and those Desire era Dylan strings! Been humming it all day.

Is anyone going to his London show tonight?

Played a nice version of Lua on 6music today

I went. It was good, obv heavy on ruminations songs (which I like) and he was a bit more ramshackle then at the last solo theatre show I saw him do.

Support was decent and I liked Phoebe Bridgers cover of Bad Blood, don’t think I’ve every heard that live.

I’ve never liked that song much but it was really good.

My favourite moment was ‘does anyone have any trouble sleeping? I SAID DOES ANYONE HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING!?!’

Not sure why I found that so funny

Oh yeah, that was really funny. Miwi La Lupa was cracking up at that.

I really enjoyed the whole show. Both supports added to the evening and then Conor seemed in pretty good form for the main event. I like him when it is a little more ramshackle and all the Ruminations tracks sounds great live (and on record too).
Lua was absolutely stunning, as was the Bad Blood cover.

Yep, all ^this.

And it was a much better show than when he was backed up and supported by Dawes, god that band were shite.
Conor seems to have such a love for dead in the water, MOR, Americana, while (mostly) avoiding those trappings himself.

Dawes were rubbish but I really liked that Koko show.

Having a look at the setlist it was half Bright Eyes songs and Rooservelt room is a great way to finish.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good show (I went to both nights in the end, so it must have been I guess), but Dawes are sadly the memory that lingers most (I was very drunk, both times).
Like was mentioned upthread, he is far better when not backed by outright session musicians.

I went and enjoyed it. Some of the really obnoxious people in the crowd who were yelling stuff and blatantly only interested in the few Bright Eyes songs at the end annoyed me tho.

It is now my dream in life to have a mouth organ man follow me around with a fish bowl of water.

Oh the First Day of my Life guy? I was far enough away it didn’t bother me too much, those people are always annoying though. As I was leaving I heard someone saying a girl poured her drink over him because of it!
