Seems like something so intrinsically tied to a time and place, that it’s just an inauthentic lens people put on their music sometimes now, rather than something you can really ‘‘be’’ anymore. Kind of like psychedelia before it.

I hear lots of little bits of individual grunge bands influence- smashing pumpkins and nirvana in stuff I like, more so than Alice in chains, pearl jam and soundgarden but maybe if I liked heavier rock then I would hear more of that style. From a indie rock perspective it’s easier to incorporate the punkier and shoegazier elements I think. Modern stuff that I think has a grunge fingerprint in the dna Beabadoobee, Wolf Alice, Cribs do it well. Then I can remember silver sun pickups and nine black alps as well. That was mid 00’s.
not into much stuff like this but i downloaded the latest Bully album recently as it was pay what you want on bandcamp and it’s pretty decent

yeah i would argue that Nevermind sounds unmistakably a product of the early 90s, whereas In Utero, Incesticide etc sound like they could have been made at any point in the last 30 years, as that less polished sound has never gone out of fashion.

Kind of have a soft spot for the ultra slick Nevermind production. Gives the whole thing this kind of ghostly, empty feeling.

It is a really interesting sound. I remember when I got my first guitar playing along and being really disappointed that I couldn’t get it to sound like any of the guitars on the album. I couldn’t get my head around it.

I really liked the October Drift album from last year. Know I’m not going to win anyone over with this description, but it’s almost like if Bush discovered Alligator and tried to make a National album with some light shoegaze touches. Just a really nice album, it caught me off guard how affecting it is at times.
Not their best song but the most stereotypically grungey - you could basically insert it onto Sixteen Stone without missing a beat. Can’t believe it’s not Gavin Rossdale singing:

Was going to post Bully at the catchier end of grunge - I am huge fan of Losing which has elements of Hole and Nirvana for sure - liked Sugaregg too.Strikes me that in a different environment they could have made it quite big.
I would also posit Superhaven - Ours is Chrome as a decent contemporary grunge record.
Dilly Dally have a definite grungy sound
Nothing were the first band that came to mind - The Great Dismal has a glossy-yet-bummed out vibe that’s kind of similar to Nevermind.
They also recorded a gorgeous cover of Something In The Way for the Whatever Nevermind compilation.

Yeah i was gonna say Thou. Don’t sound grunge per se but the influence is clearly there in a number of riffs and melodies. The Rhea Slyvia EP in particular wore the AiC influence proudly. And of course there are the millions of Nirvana covers, and soundgarden…
But yeah, side 2 of Rhea Sylvia in particular…
The HIRS Collective side of the nirvana covers record is brilliant also while we’re at it (better than the Thou side to be honest). super party (they don’t generally sound grunge though!)

Yeah, exactly. I’m thinking that the reference above to Kerrang explains it. Grunge was inherited by metalheads and became some sub-genre (sludge metal? idk) or a flourish, while everywhere else it largely petered out.
That’s my theory, anyway.
Gonna go through this thread and listen to the sincere suggestions over the next few days.
This is actually a really good description. It also happens to capture why I find the album a bit mediocre.
