Do any of you happen to be copy editors or close to someone who is a copy editor? This is my absolute ideal job but it seems pretty much impossible to get a foothold in unless you’ve gone down a media route (I work in a specialist public sector role). It would be great if anyone has any advice or experiences they can share.
Also if anyone is looking for free copy editing / proofreading / writing etc and is prepared to give a named testimonial if happy with the work please let me know - it would be an enormous help. I do have experience in these areas, including editing text from multiple authors to fit a consistent style.
Please help me not be subject to the whims of fascist politicians. Thank you xx
I was telling my manager the other day that i shouldn’t be doing copywriting/editing anymore as its not been my role for a while and we need to have someone freelance for us so i can raise it. Some of it is pretty vacuous but a lot of it is quite interesting as it tends to be culture/social impact and how towns and cities can improve. But outside of my area the business writes a lot on charitable initiatives and sustainability and all sorts of stuff. I tend to do a lot of speech writing for directors too and writing award entries. It’s actually pretty interesting and i only want to do less of it as my role is meant to be something entirely different now and i cant possibly do both concurrently.
If anything comes up i can let you know - i know i moan about them a lot but this stuff is pretty good and freelance would mean avoiding the culture!
I’d also be interested in helping out if needed
Thanks - and yeah, I definitely want to stick to freelance. I’ll work on trying to get some voluntary experience and testimonials for now and try to build a footing to branch out from. Hopefully if I can start picking up a few jobs I can drop my hours for my current job (although I suspect they may have an issue with the second job thing).
Sure thing. We also sometimes use a place called City Press who seem like a really sound company and know what they’re talking about so worth keeping an eye on them for opportunities.
Thank you, will keep an eye out. 2023 goal is to get a job where I can actually use my degree and enjoy it so will definitely have a look
I’d also say keep an eye on these guys too as they do so many good projects and a great scope of stuff, not sure if they write/edit in house or not but they’re ones of the agencies I’d definitely have on my list of good places to work
(Copy editing, writing and localisation is one of those jobs that’s really huge in the games industry but people don’t tend to consider it as an industry to look for those jobs)
I’d be happy to help as I do a fair bit of it in my job!
Think I’ll do this as a Christmas present to myself. Can then space the further ones over 2023 if I want to continue.

Copy editing is actually ome of my fav work things to do (that actually pays), but so many companies etc don’t realise how much they need someone to do just that job. I find there’s often very little understanding of what the whole editing job actually consists of even when someone has hired me to do it, it’s very frustrating at times.
Yes my sister is…I will see what she says
Copy editing is a small part of my job but the most fun.
There’s one client who keeps mistaking commas for quotation marks and it drives me mad but also it’s satisfying to fix a few pages of that nonsense.
People have the strangest ideas sometimes
We have one that just randomly puts words in quotation marks for absolutely no reason.
Bump for day shift types.
The offer for free copy editing / proofreading / writing applies to pretty much anything by the way - doesn’t need to be strictly professional
one thing I would find quite handy for future projects potentially is typesetting as well as proof reading and copyediting
if you have a limited budget and don’t have the capacity to manage lots of relationships, it’s quite handy to have someone who is good at all those things and has nice templates
I say this after spending ages on a report, getting it proof read, checking all links etc… then a colleague just got his son to “typeset” it and it looks so shit I can’t even share it
