I also fear this Captain Tom thing (through no fault of his own) will further perpetuate the jingoistic ‘Blitz Spirit’ fetishisation of soldiering, warfare and kowtowing to the ruling class our country remains pathetically obsessed with, and the effect this has on public discourse regarding situations such as COVID-19. Stop complaining, because look at what your elders had to endure - two World Wars, remember! Look, this frail old man is still serving his country after all these years, and you lot are sniping about NHS funding, death rates, government inaction, “following the science” and other things you’ve got no bloody business knowing about anyway. We won’t get through this by asking awkward questions and demanding accountability; us officers and gentlemen are doing the best we can and know what’s good for you all, so Keep Calm and Carry On with stoic and stiff upper lips. “We’ll Meet Again”.
Apologies for the incoherence, but this stuff really fucks me off.
(This is not to denigrate Captain Tom or his achievements, nor the efforts of those who served and died so long ago).
