Together Alone was a staple album played at home growing up, one that the whole family could agree on without someone shouting to turn that shit off.
Didn’t realise until last week that they’d reformed and were touring and releasing new music. They’re playing Tilburg tonight and I’m trying to decide whether they’re worth €50 ticket, + train fee + 50 minute train ride each way.
Setlist was pretty decent last night tbf
Listened to their back catalogue a bit this week and Together Alone still sounds great to me, alongside bits of Woodface, but the new stuff and other older stuff does nothing for me. The new stuff in particular sounds forgettable.
I reckon they get more shit than they deserve because their biggest songs are their most annoying ones. I don’t need to hear Don’t Dream It’s Over again in my life.
Surprised there’s no thread, how about I put a poll in.
The concert was recorded on the outside steps of the Sydney Opera House, as a charity event to raise funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital. The event was originally scheduled for the night of 23 November 1996; however, it was delayed one day due to rain. The concert was to be the last that the group played, as the group had announced their dissolution several months prior. The concert attracted a crowd of greater than 100,000 people, with some estimates of 250,000 people in attendance.
Their next concert after this was on the Thekla in Bristol (small venue on a boat). I went.
I absolutely love them. You should definitely go see them. Absolute pop bangers and still very subversive, in a gentle way. Not AOR in any way, shape or form. Neil Finn is a genius.
I’d have to say Recurring Dream really is a brilliant Best Of, loved it and have been to see them in concert, but I don’t think i’ve ever listended to any of their studio albums other than the most recent one which I skimmed and dismissed.
NB. They’ve reformed twice, with (to date) two new albums from each lineup. The current one is Neil and Nick plus Mitchell Froom (older producer and occasional organist) plus Neil’s sons who are both great. I think Intriguer is the better of the two from the first reformation, and the current album is the better of the two from the recent comeback.
For a sec there I thought you meant directly after this show. I mean, I love The Thekla but I can’t imagine it being the logical place to follow this show.
