Crowded House

Together Alone was a staple album played at home growing up, one that the whole family could agree on without someone shouting to turn that shit off.

Didn’t realise until last week that they’d reformed and were touring and releasing new music. They’re playing Tilburg tonight and I’m trying to decide whether they’re worth €50 ticket, + train fee + 50 minute train ride each way.

Setlist was pretty decent last night tbf

Listened to their back catalogue a bit this week and Together Alone still sounds great to me, alongside bits of Woodface, but the new stuff and other older stuff does nothing for me. The new stuff in particular sounds forgettable.

I reckon they get more shit than they deserve because their biggest songs are their most annoying ones. I don’t need to hear Don’t Dream It’s Over again in my life.

Surprised there’s no thread, how about I put a poll in.

This would have been good I reckon

The concert was recorded on the outside steps of the Sydney Opera House, as a charity event to raise funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital. The event was originally scheduled for the night of 23 November 1996; however, it was delayed one day due to rain. The concert was to be the last that the group played, as the group had announced their dissolution several months prior. The concert attracted a crowd of greater than 100,000 people, with some estimates of 250,000 people in attendance.

Their next concert after this was on the Thekla in Bristol (small venue on a boat). I went.

I absolutely love them. You should definitely go see them. Absolute pop bangers and still very subversive, in a gentle way. Not AOR in any way, shape or form. Neil Finn is a genius.

I’d have to say Recurring Dream really is a brilliant Best Of, loved it and have been to see them in concert, but I don’t think i’ve ever listended to any of their studio albums other than the most recent one which I skimmed and dismissed.

NB. They’ve reformed twice, with (to date) two new albums from each lineup. The current one is Neil and Nick plus Mitchell Froom (older producer and occasional organist) plus Neil’s sons who are both great. I think Intriguer is the better of the two from the first reformation, and the current album is the better of the two from the recent comeback.

For a sec there I thought you meant directly after this show. I mean, I love The Thekla but I can’t imagine it being the logical place to follow this show.

I see his son Liam is in the band now too. I remember seeing him at one of the ATP vs. the Fans years back, was good if I remember correctly

I remember liking this track in particular back then

How is there not a Crowded House thread already if the polls are so positive so far?

“Four Seasons…” is the only one I like.

Prefer the MOR stylings of late era split enz:

Split Enz - Message To My Girl (Official Video)

I only know bringing the weather with you (meaning I), and it’s never quite made sense to me.

Ha! Yes, I meant first post-reformation gig, apart from an invite-only show in a Bath rehearsal studio the day before.

I saw them at a festival in 94 and they were great fun.

…or rather two days before. Annoyingly with a much better setlist.

I liked the original radio series of Flight of the Conchords where every episode would end with them phoning Neil Finn for guidance and advice

I really like Don’t Dream It’s Over.

Don’t know them at all apart from the pop hits which I think are ace.

I will admit that I did enjoy the Song Exploder episode on Don’t Dream It’s Over
