What benefits does a carbon fork have over a solid gold fork, which I could also afford?

more comfortable. it absorbs road vibration better.

will also be lighter, but the comfort is the main selling point.

You seem to have missed where I didn’t say that but instead I said there are better entry level road bikes, but, okay

thanks guys for your aggregated advice. I think i’m gonna head on down to decathlers next month and try out a few of these Tribans I’ve heard good things about.

Nah it’s alright, you’ve said it loud and clear by slating it constantly in this thread. It doesn’t matter that I ride that bike every day and find it a perfectly good bike to ride 10-20 miles a day on but who am I to have an opinion ay

It’s only got “shit gears”. Other bikes have “wheels that aren’t dogshit” and “are infinitely better” and only good for people who “pootle about”

As if I’m gonna bother joining a cycling club if there’s this level of bullshit involved with the cycling scene!

You haven’t really read what I’m saying though, clearly, because you think I’m attacking you / your bike, when I’m not doing that at all.

Any bike which gets you cycling and introduced to the thing I enjoy the most in the entire world is good.

It’s all written up there! Not sure why you can’t accept that you’ve been slating it when you clearly have…

It just screams “my bike is better than your bike” and let’s face it, they’re both shit bikes in the grand scheme of bikes.

First I actually recommended it to j_i and then listed why other budget bikes are better / worse. That’s all. I don’t really get why you’re getting so defensive. It’s obv great that you’ve got a bike you enjoy so much and have got loads of value out of! Christ.

Here’s Mr pn’s route to work:

https://www.strava.com/activities/705726754

So from Peckham, go up the Surrey Canal path and then into Burgess Park. When you exit BP it’s mainly cycle superhighway, avoiding E&C. It’s twisty and turny but once you’ve memorised it, it’s fine. He says once you get onto Blackfriars Bridge there’s a cycle superhighway all the way to Clerkenwell and you should be able to turn off left somewhere to go to where you need to go.

I’d also look at Cycle Streets and see what their routes say. They normally give three options, going from quiet and slow, to busy and fast.

I use a Charge Spoon saddle and find it fine. Saddles are very personal though so you might find it well uncomfortable.

ta! I think I’ll try out this and a few other routes I’ve found before starting the jawb.

Carrying on the Elephant & Castle roundabout is shit chat, found this article on the most dangerous road junctions for cyclists in London. I cycle through loads of them regularly and they are indeed fairly skectchy - surprised that Bow one didn’t make the list, but maybe the timeframe doesn’t fit as I think it only became a massive problem after they reworked the layout a couple of years back…

Don’t find that Monument junction too bad, but on the whole London is full of terrible junctions for cyclists. Just never ever cycle on the inside of a high-sided vehicle, and take the lane if you are unsure. Don’t let drivers intimidate you. I found the free cycle training provided by my local authority was the best way to understand how to cycle in London (as well as just doing it every day- practice makes perfect, and all that).
