Cheers :+1:

You’ve got me looking at discounted units on Wiggle and other places that look reasonable: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/garmin-edge-touring-gps-cycle-computer/

The worst thing about my Garmin is the fiddly tun-by-turn directions. The fact it has no storage to fit massive maps on means every time I cycle somewhere different (which is, weirdly, quite often) I have to download an OSM for that area and then transfer it across and it’s just fucking shit. Looks like the Tour’s main feature is the navigation, so you probably won’t have any of that bullshittery.

I am srsly tempted my the Wahoo ELEMNT @grievoustim

this is why I was wondering why my phone with strava wouldn’t suit my needs. I only need to know where I’m going, really. Can’t I just have it set on a loud volume with directions blazing through like that from my pocket?

I do like the Wahoo - route loading etc is easy. Think it has maps of a lot of the world on it (think it’s missing Asia and Africa, due to not enough memory, but there is a way to swap to those maps if you need to)

Battery life is really good - it was switched on for 10 plus hours yesterday, and still had 20% charge left.

1st issue encountered, I tried to upload yesterdays ride using the smartphone app/ bluetooth/ 4g yesterday and it lost half the ride (ride is still on the unit, but the smartphone app/ strave etc are wrong). I have no issues with uploading rides over WiFi, so hopefully it is just a glitch (I will wait until I get home before I upload rides in future)

I should add I have never had a Garmin - so I don’t have anything to compare it too

what the fuck are you dingbats talking about?

I don’t think Strava does turn by turn navigation - certainly not over the phone speaker

Unless it’s a premium feature or they’ve added it recently

Depends – lots of roads leaving London are mental so saying “go left” isn’t very useful. And like Tim says, Strava doesn’t have TBT directions.

There’s no way I would use a phone now – the amount of times my bike’s fallen over when I’ve stopped for a coffee / I’ve crashed / etc means I’d worry about it, and on a 2+ hour ride with the screen constantly on the battery would easily die pretty quick. There’s something easy about using a Garmin or similar. Also, you will certainly become quickly interested in your speed / distance as it allows you to track your progress. I mean, come on, you’ve bought SPDs. You will be getting a Garmin.

I’ll just plan the route on google maps and stick the iphone in the back pocket I think.

Doesn’t using Google Maps just route you down any old shit road? That’s the point of using a GPS – so you can plan routes to avoid those.

dunno, just did this though - https://goo.gl/maps/tGmrEyw1fQt

hmmmm trying to justify a ‘hot weather base layer’ that seems incredibly counter productive.

may be good for long alpine descents when air temp is 30 degrees plus?
otherwise seems completely pointless but of course i do want one

yeah, you can probably do it, and it’ll be fine for your needs now, but I’ll put money on you getting a Garmin if you “get into” this cycling bollocks in the next six months

just you wait

I’ll bet you £249.99 plus P+P that I don’t.

Wait do people in London need to get a computer to tell them where to go on bike rides?

No, but it helps to have something to show you were you should be going?

just be free, man

I don’t want to accidentally ride onto a Very Large road though

You can still look where you’re going
