Excellent - I’ve stopped patching old tubes (unless it’s an emergency) as I’ve had a few leak air from patches. I’m gonna start sending them here now!

anyone got any fixed mudguard recommendations? sks? i know they’re all a pain to fit. tempted by the cheap lifeline ones tbh.

No recommendations, but I was going to ask if mudgaurds were advisable? Going to be on a lot of tree-lined paths = lots of leaf litter.

Was going to go to Halfords to try on helmets (only place close enough for me to get this week), but might sack that off and just order one from Decathers. Hopefully I can cycle my bike home Friday if it seems alright.

Also, I still don’t really understand gearing and things I have read have just confused me more. Does anyone have a simple way of explaining it/something easy to understand they could point me towards?

absolutely 100% yes if you’re riding in winter. country lanes can be pretty wet when town / city centres aren’t. your triban 3 has mounts for guards but the slightly smaller wheels might make it tricky to fit them. i used clip-on guards last year (sks raceblace pro xl) and they were fine and really made a difference in the wet.

you have an extremely wide range on yr new triban - three rings up front on yr crankset (i think the number of teeth is 50/39/30) and then a 7 (i think) speed cassette on the back

The front rings are big jumps. Inside one makes hills easier.

Rear ones are smaller increments. You’ll figure them out as you go, there’s a point where you’re in the middle rear and the front big/little are very similar

So what would be a good gear to start with if I was going on the flat?

In the big ring at the front, and depending on how many sprockets you have at the back, 4th from the top maybe, then work your way down the block as you build speed. But sitting in the middle is good

on a triple; middle or big ring at the front, and then just find something on the back you’re comfy with. changing gear is easy and you will do it a lot and end up not even thinking about it.

the levers on a triban 3 are a bit weird and unlike those on a newer road bike as they have a thumb lever for changing down (or up, can’t remember, to do the inverse you move the entire shifter inwards)

Depends on your puny legs/if you like your legs spinning quickly. Probably middle ring front, middle of the rear.

i’ve got fixed sks ones, can’t remember what ones. they were a doddle to fit tbh

edit: needed to hacksaw the poles down once they were in place, so you’ll need a wee £2 hacksaw. but they were hardly a major faff.

the lifeline ones look v similar to any sks ones in that i think hacking will be involved
