Haha her relative effort is lower than mine when I trundled around some hills for a few hours last weekend

must be the heat. i’ve never seen him complain much about them before

It all sounds a bit tame compared to the stories and photos that come out from the people running Marathon Des Sables. Those make you never want to run again.

anyone bought cycling-specific travel insurance recently? don’t mean for the bike, but for me in the event something happens when i’m doing pbp.

i think i got some non-cycling specific personal travel insurance not this year, but last year for mallorca

it was a couple of quid on top of my flight or car rental or something. never used it.

i’m aware this post helps you in no way whatsoever.

Have you had a medical /got signed off by the doctor? Do you have to??

I know for my etapes once you had that you were covered for at least 3rd party liability, I think it’s the same for any organised sporting event in France…

no.

entrance to pbp includes some sort of insurance, but not repatriation.

the fact it’s a non-competitive event but there is a time limit and you’ve got chips is meaning i’m finding it difficult to get answers about whether or not i would be covered. i found one place which would insure you to do extreme downhill mtbing but not riding a bike for more than 72 hours.

Why is it Sooo hard to find a good lbs in this city.

Spent literally 2 hours waiting for the mechanic to change some brake pads yesterday. Went like this:

"hi, can you take a look at the gears please, they’re indexed OK but they’re not 100% and I really just want them working absolutely perfectly. Maybe change the cables if you think it needs it.

Also, one of the rotors is a bit bent, can you sort that?

Lastly, there’s a horrible gravelly noise coming from the headset area when turning the bars.

I’m not in a rush so can leave bike here and pick up whenever, before the weekend. I’m planning to jog home anyway. "

" you need new brake pads"

“OK, fine do that too please”

“I can do it now if you want to wait?”

"all of it?? Really, OK sure… "

TWO HOURS LATER

“yeah so I changed the pads but can’t get them to stop rubbing, I’ve tried a few things but need to keep fiddling. Do you want to leave the bike here??”

“… yes”.

“OK so tomorrow I’ll call and the brake pads will be ready.”

“what about the other stuff I asked you to do”

"what other stuff? "

“just call me tomorrow, I’m going home.”

why you should learn to fix your own bike

Two hours to change some brake pads?

I’m terrible with bike stuff, but I reckon I could do that in a quarter of an hour.

LOL

I took my bike into a LBS the other morning, just for a pre-PBP look over, but they were too busy to fit me in and basically now I cba to get it looked at.

bit more difficult with discs, but still would take me about an hour to do front and rear

as I mentioned (and then failed to follow up because I went out riding) in yesterday’s evening thread, someone punched me in the head (I had my helmet on, so fine) on my ride home yesterday. Basically some kids were mucking about on the Surrey Canal Path near Peckham, I slowed to allow them to move, gave one of them a look about one second too long, and he just punched me.

I slowed to ride next to him and asked “did you just punch me?” while his mate was pissing himself, and then suddenly I thought WTAF am I doing so I rode off.

Kids, eh?

:upside_down_face:

I love my local place - they’re so good. They’ll turn around a full strip down and wheel truing service within 3 days.

If you’re wanting to get it done, they’re here:

It’s a bit pricey, but it means that I never have to bother with that kind of stuff.

God knows what he was doing, he was angle grinding something at some point.

@japes I can do most of it, I just don’t usually have the time /cba. So I take it to the lbs to get it done quickly lol.

Like the gears are fine apart from clicking in one specific sprocket only and I don’t have the patience to spend an afternoon sorting that. Specially as its not my bike.

On my bike the front mech is still playing up and I’ve tried everythng trying to fix that so that is going to the shop too.

Anyone want to have a go at my v specific front derailleur problem???

I have tiny allen keys so getting the caliper re-aligned takes ages cos my mudguards are in the way

loosen the bolts, squeeze the brake, tighten the bolts. done.

get some new allen keys?
