Decathlon, probably

Glasgow.

I am fine with that, but as I said, a lot of shops are backed up with a week’s work and don’t seem interested in my patronage. I will try the wheel one more time, and then get in the queue.

get a specialized hardrock

Ha! I had lovely silver one way back when and some bastard nicked it from outside Worcester station, the insurance replacement was a black ‘box’ frame one which was crap for attaching mud guards and the like. Never liked it and it’s about to go. Thought I might branch out.

@grievoustim will know more than me, but in general all the big manufacters mtb offerings around that level are pretty much the same quality, all the same parts on similar frames. So you can pretty safely just pick a budget, pick one you like the look of and go for it.

(one thing to look out for would be type of brake, they’re all disc brakes now on mountain bikes but some will be mechanical (with a cable that pull the brake, like the old days).

Higher spec bikes will be hydraulic (a sealed system like you get on a car), these are generally the best but a hell of a faff when they go wrong.

can I just check when whoever upthread said “change the dials back to the lowest gear and fit the chain on the lowest” does that mean set 1 and gear 1, then put the chain on the smallest spokes?

set it so it’s in the smallest sprocket in the front gears, and the smallest at the back.

Not arguing but

The lowest gear is when the chain is on the smallest cog on the front and the largest cog on the rear

Hence my confusion

Can’t say I’ve ever had a problem with mechanical brakes, primarily because Norfolk traffic is pretty predictable or you can hear it coming (unlike cities). Good to know that it’s much of a muchness though…

I know next to nothing about sub £500 bikes :slightly_smiling_face:

As you say they are all much of a muchness I think

 (I did wonder whether I should have gone to the Bikes For Numpties Thread…)

The original advice was true though, at that price bikes are all very similar in terms of spec, and Niki’s suggestion about decathlon would be the best bet tbf. They have a slightly higher spec than your entry level treks, specialized and giants. Just depends if there’s one near by for testing (understand this isn’t the best time for that though).

there’s another brand which gets good reviews for what they cost, calibre i think?

crosschain bad

ah shit, under normal non-socially-distant circumstances i’d offer to pop round and break it a bit more for you

i’ve got some cone spanners i could probably get to you if you’re still struggling and wanted to have a go at tightening the hub bearings yourself?

Thanks for the posted review, I will take a look, and at Decathlon too…

Appreciate it, but I think it’s overdue for a service so I should probably just get it over with.

Took the wheel off, it’s definitely the wheel that’s causing the issue not the forks that hold it on because I shouldn’t be able to do this :disappointed_relieved:
