Chainrings can damage shins too Tim.

Went up in the loft the other day and the bike up there is a dmr frame. That’s all I know about it. Think it’s from the 90s?? It has disc mounts though…

It does have wheels, 26ers I think.

(Took pictures of various bits to google when I could be bothered but forgot to take one of the whole thing :see_no_evil:)

is this season 2 of ā€˜harru needs an odd component’ ?

This is why it’s still in the loft.

+1 for Exposure lights and V8 pedals.

Specifically, I’ve got a Sirius MK8 DayBright (front) and TraceR MK2 ReAKT (rear) bought in a bundle pair from Wiggle (and having checked just now, it seems there’s apparently a perma-deal on that pairing). Have without question been given noticably more room by cars after upgrading from some cheapo USB LED jobbers that I thought were half-decent up until upgrading. The brightness of the front light is such that I generally use it in most daytime conditions that aren’t full, bright, daylight sun (i.e. when it’s even slightly overcast, rather than yer actual dawn/dusk/night time). I reckon the ReAKT feature is particularly valuable (i.e. reacting to when you brake, kinda like a car’s light would, so your speed changes are comprehended at a glance by motorists in the same way they’d notice a motor vehicle slowing down) (although I haven’t ridden behind it to see it in action for real, first-hand, to make a fully informed personal judgement). Lovely product design too. If I were buying again and money were tighter, I’d defo just stick with that brand and downgrade slightly. If equivalent features are available on other brands for a comparable price, fair enough, but that didn’t seem to be the case when I was looking into things ~three years ago.

Despite having logged plenty of kms with Look Keo pedals without any complaint whatsoever, I not-so-secretly suspect that clip in pedals are effectively snake oil for keeping up appearances for any sort of general riding that doesn’t fall firmly and absolutely into the category of ā€˜training’ or ā€˜competing’, rather than any sort of leisure or urban usage. And flats kinda bring back the feeling of my hop-on-hop-off-wherever-whenever BMX days, so there’s that, too.

@rich-t @plasticniki @japes @svenrokk @TheWza thank you for your advice!!

When my dad went to that TdF stage that was over here whatever year it was in the 90s he brought back a set of jersey badges which were really cool. But I had to share them with my brother and somehow only ended up with green (which was the best one, but still… 1/3 isn’t fair)

Not sure I’ve got it anymore, haven’t seen it for years :frowning:

i bought these lights for being seen when cycling home from the park etc. at the moment and they are INSANELY bright and cheap, and also weight basically nothing so i just keep them in my pocket

EDIT: fucking awful wiggle link, try this

Ooh yes to those. I use the rear for TTs.

incredibly niche question here but a group of friends are going to Margate for a mate’s 35th next Saturday and I figured I could just cycle there/back and stay over one or two nights rather than pay for/get the tube and train there. does anyone have any suggestions for cheap hotels or whatever that let you store a bike safely? seems like Premier Inn will actually let you keep your bike in the room with you which is amazing but the closest one is Canterbury I think…

never had problems with premier inn or travelodge or… are there other chains? can’t remember.

with airbnb i always* mention it in a message to check that the host is okay with me bringing the bike inside.

*once when me and a lot of people off here were staying somewhere in sheffield i forgot to mention it and the bloke got really bloody huffy so i won’t ever make that mistake again

hadn’t actually considered Airbnb but i assume they’re open if hotels and that are now? weirdly way less concerned about staying somewhere than i am about getting public transport, although maybe it’s not actually that weird

well you have control over the number of people you come into close contact with in a hotel. not so much on public transport…

(campsite might be an idea if you have the gear?)

also, here’s a route for you as far as Seasalter

Taken a bike many times to a Travelodge, Premier Inn, etc. They always act well weird about it at reception, but all it’s going to do is lean against a wardrobe for 10 hours so fuck em.

in Dover they made us leave our bikes in the laundry room. irked.

i mean that’s better than the bike storage at the only hotel in john o’groats: a garage which remains open for anyone to come in and steal yr bike

when i did etape loch ness i stayed in a premier inn, was fully booked and i bet every single person in there had a bike and no one gave a fuck. was great.

That’s a lovely route through my neck of the woods! For my money I’d go down the Newnham/Doddington road when heading north. It’s a nice road, rarely busy and has a gentle downhill gradient that means you can basically coast down to Faversham at 20+mph without breaking a sweat.
