plus… the bonfire

Not as exciting as MidnightPunk finally beating big Gael, but I finished an NG++ run on DS3 last night and got the platinum.

Abyss Watchers kicked the shit out of me for a couple of hours this time. No idea why it is but I cannot get on top of the second phase. Was very concerned that the Pontiff would fuck me up but he went down like a sack of spuds. Struggled more than I expected against the Princes and Nameless King was tough but not as much of a problem as I expected.

The twenty hours of grinding out covenant items was quite soul destroying though.

can you explain to a non trophy hunter why you need to beat NK at NG++

Last ring you need for the trophy is in the room after him and it only spawns in NG++ or higher.

ah ok. Love NK, don’t get the hate
maybe it’s trophy hunters talking shit

Yeah, he’s what you expect from a tough, optional boss. Like any multi-stage one it can get frustrating having to get past the first phase just to get your head immediately kicked in.

Think I’ll take a break from Soulsing for a bit. Maybe finally play The Last Guardian.

Having spent most of the summer playing DS3, what are your thoughts on best bosses?

Think I’d put the Pontiff at the top. A big step up in difficulty when you first meet him but really satisfying to learn and has a great, unexpected second phase without taking the piss.

Dancer after that. Not the hardest but I really like the atmosphere, the sudden change in music and the way they nail a more ethereal, unnatural type of movement.

Gael’s last phase gets pretty over the top with all the additional effects splashing everywhere but another one where there’s a real feeling of satisfaction as you feel yourself progressing slowly.

Torn about Friede. She’s cool but a bit too frustrating to fully enjoy. Really like Aldrich for some reason.

You?

Pinwheel just got smashed up.

Boned (pfnaar) my way out afterward when I discovered I ended up somewhere so dark I couldn’t see a thing. Loads of routes open to me now!

Agree on Pontiff and Dancer. My thoughts on the DLC bosses are well documented…

Abyss Watchers is my standout. Presentation is incredible, well balanced fight, good name.

Soul of Cinder is a really good fight, feels really challenging and suitably epic without being cheap. Twin Princes is good for atmosphere and quite an interesting concept. For me Aldrich was quite underwhelming after how much he was built up, and that arrow attack is just annoying.

Did notice on a replay they overused the delayed release magic orbs as a way to add challenge to bosses.

My thoughts will be compiled at the end of my current run, but I think Gael is going at the top of the list of hardest boss (at SL1)

Totally forgot about him! Yeah, the switching weapons was a really nice way to extend that fight and make you work in different ways.

Hate them, but it’s my fault not theirs.

I’m nowhere near good enough to do SL1 so Friede ahead of Gael for me but I see where the reduced opportunities for big hits would make a difference.

Yeah Gael is fucking baws no matter your build. Resistant to slash and dark, that’s half the population silenced

I do love the Abyss Watchers though, true Git Gud moment for everyone

I’ll back you up on Aldritch! Didn’t seem like much on my first run but on this one I got close and engaged a lot more and it became pretty spectacular. Remember the arrows really giving me a hard time the first time I fought him but they’re just there to look cool really.

Think DS3 has a pretty high percentage of the best bosses in the series. Pontiff’s great. Dancer’s ace. Abyss Watchers are entertaining. Feel like the Consumed King is a lot of fun too but I’ve yet to get there again. Friede and Gael are top-tier as well. I did the Lord of Cinder really quick last time so it’ll be interesting to kinda get more of a feel for the fight. Oh and the Princes are an interesting one. Even the Crystal Sage is very memorable.

Do I have to kill this dragon?

I’ve just started a second go on SOTFS! Going for a magic build this time, got as far as The Pursuer fight, and decided I didn’t need to go down that particular rabbit hole tonight.

Really don’t know where I’m going here.

Okay, I have Chloranthy Ring +3 and will equip. I’m getting this.

Time for God.

Let there be death.

Signs look ominous and I’m at the cloud door.
