Dark Souls Thread - Phase 3

You just cannot beat a good ol’ parry.

You can do stupid damage with absolutely any character in this particular game before the pyromancies got attached to INT and FTH requirements in later games. A SL1 character can destroy Ornstein with about 10 fireball/combustions. It’s pretty basic stuff but does nasty damage with no stat requirements, basically.

You might find you’re finally tired of sword and shield, at least trying something new will breathe some fresh life into the game for you

Ok, 4 phases of the final Sekiro boss, eh? Maybe this is where I give up. Lose motivation when there’s nowhere to explore after. Though I think I said that about the Elden Ring final boss, and have beaten that twice.

Was thinking about having a break from From games, and immediately felt the itch to play DS1 again.

Feel like this is very reductive for the casting experience! There are times when this is what you’ll do but it’s much more common to have a staff or whatever in one hand and a sword in the other to juggle the two means of damage dealing especially as enemies close the gaps or you get swamped. Playing as a mage is fun tactical and challenging. I would wholeheartedly recommend replaying any souls game you know well from melee as a caster: bits you struggle with become easy and bits you thought were easy become challenging!

Would particularly recommend the mage experience in ds2: game really shines as a mage.

That boss is the boss par excellence for me, never got tired of it (though that doesn’t mean I didn’t get frustrated!). Feel like the last phase is a bit of a victory lap if you’re alright with the technique.

Not got close to phase three so far. Do love Isshin climbing out of Genichiro’s body. Might put it down for a day or two and come back.

Always a good plan! Think it was the second phase I struggled most with too, if it’s the one with the big jumping downward spear swipes.

They build on each other rather than introduce a completely new fight as some of the bosses in these games do. A few new moves but the style of fight is still the same.

This quote should inspire you.

I’ve found it hard in all souls to do spell based characters because it often feels I’m just spamming the button from a distance instead of getting up close and sticking a sword in them. Never feels as much fun.

If you’re doing a SL1 run in DS though, pyromancy is a given. Upgrading your glove to max costs a lot of souls but since you’re not levelling your character you can plough them into that.

Great combustion is a great spell to use up close. Makes Ornstein shit his pants.

Ha. Yep. Noted, past kram. Think the main issue right now is that I’m at the end, and really want to get there, but not in the right frame of mind to do it… another day

Love this fight to bits and I never really struggled with it, but I think the third phase (if you include Genichiro) is pretty different from the previous one once he pulls out the spear and the friggin uzi??. For me it’s somewhere in the middle between totally bullshit additional phases and the top tier stuff like Lady Maria.

Yeah, don’t leave it too long though. I’m on a different ending which I’ve done before but not for a long time and can’t get past the first stage.

Definite muscle memory required.

Not doing SL1. What should I be levelling?

None of your stats will improve the pyromancy or the glove. Treat the glove like any weapon. Upgrade it. Think the first chance is when you meet your man in the depths

Are you doing pure pyromancy or sorcery/faith in the mix?

.That was my first play through of Sekiro, to the point where I actually walked away from the game then had to start again from the beginning to finally beat the boss as I had left it too long to jump back in.( was still resolutely trying to play it like a souls game on my first play through which you 100% cannot do with this boss).

I still hate phase 3. To summarize:

Phase 1 - “yeah sit down you clown, your no match for me”
Phase 2 - “Oh really, you think that going make a difference, eat sword punk!”
Phase 3 - “AAAAAhhhhh! Oh God he’s relentless…please just let me get through this!”
Phase 4 - “Phew! I am glad phase 3 is over.”

I forget which one it is. Character has a hood by default.

I was

Phase 1 - “Not again?"
Phase 2 - “New boss FFS!”
Phase 3 - “I’ve reached the final stage!”
Phase 4 - “Taking the piss now.”

I think stage 4 is easier than 3 though
