I mean I don’t imagine the “Ayer Cut” is any better than the cinema one for me but it seems weird of WB to go to all the trouble of doing the SnyderCut and not then doing this too. Unless…The SnyderCut massively underperformed in terms of launching HBO MAX?

(Obviously I’m assuming here that Ayer’s Cut doesn’t need huge extra cash going into it)

The Suicide Squad is pretty decent but it felt really strongly like a Marvel film to me

As a non comics guy I’m not sure there’s that much difference between most Marvel and DC stuff. I think Batman’s a strange sort of outlier as are the Snyder ones.

gotta disagree with this. DC got so stuck in the “dark and gritty” mood that Nolan’s films set that it’s been their undoing. Taking something as inherently ludicrous as an invincible hench space alien who disguises himself with spectacles and trying to make it a DEEP AND SERIOUS thing, utter nonsense. Perhaps I’m agreeing with you regarding Snyder being the outlier, but it feels like Snyder is very much DC’s “guy”.

Marvel, and specifically Jon Favreau and RDJ, set a very specific tone with Iron Man and like it or loathe it, that DNA is in pretty much every MCU film.

Except I wouldn’t say either Aquaman or the first Suicide Squad were massively ‘dark and gritty’. Whedon’s Justice League was pretty up beat too. Edit to say these films were not good of course!

Certainly I think all three Captain America films are as essentially dark and gritty as DC under Nolan & Snyder, and I’d say Infinity War and Endgame are short on jokes and long on dark. Black Widow has a whole layer of fucked up stuff and Homecoming has its dark edges.

Even the shitty colour palettes are mainly confined to Snyder’s films I reckon.

I’ll take your word for it because I hated Man of Steel and the 20 minutes I watched of Batman vs Superman so much that I checked out completely and The Suicide Squad will be the first DC film I’ve watched in years. I have heard that Aquaman doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I guess my ignorance speaks to the perception of the DC films more than the reality. I do understand why people think there’s a Marvel ‘tone’ (and I think that’s in the Captain America films too, albeit toned down). Aside from all that, it makes 100% sense that there is a sense of familiarity in a film with an ensemble cast of bizarre characters no-one has heard of, directed by someone most famous for scoring an unexpected hit with a film starring an ensemble cast of bizarre characters no-one had ever heard of

All just personal opinions :slightly_smiling_face:

The DC films are bad by and large so as this new one sounds good I can get behind it seeming like a Marvel film!

But by non- comics people I was widening stuff to include people who enjoy comic book films but don’t particularly care about who made them. I think there are a chunk of those out there and for them there’s not huge difference between either camp because a lot of what makes them obvious to us is just unimportant for them?

Shazam wasn’t amazing but was a lot closer in tone to Marvel and kind of fun. It took inspiration from Big and teen comedy’s, didn’t feel too far from a PG Superbad.

In places yeah, but some of the stuff with those demons was pretty terrifying for a family film I thought. Maybe I’m just a coward.

Absolutely forgotten that Shazam even existed!

Shazam was great.

Shazam, Birds Of Prey and Wonder Woman are the only DC films that exist.

I’ve noticed this has popped up on Netflix recently so will check it out. I thought it looked great and I love …thingary whatshischops from Mrs Maisel, but then I heard mixed things about it and never got round to checking it out. Now that cinemas here have abandoned social distancing I think I’ll be back to films at home for the forseeable…

Not seen a second of any DC stuff, guess it’s fine to just jump in?

Yeah it’s a reboot and doesn’t follow on

Watched Suicide Squad last night. It was fine liked:

the rat Sebastian, king shark and the potential of Peacemaker basically all the obvious crowd pleasing stuff

Dislked

would have liked to see how far Peacemaker would go for peace they talk about it but would have like to have seen it, the ending with Starro was rubbish. Some of the gore shots were just tiresome.

Do you mean The Suicide Squad or Suicide Squad, the original film, as I only want to read spoilers for the original piece of shit.
