Richard Curtis should not be allowed to make films…

I always think it’s a shame when that happens, letting other people’s interpretations put you off going to see something. Somehow it feels different when it’s due to an “issue” with the film rather than when it’s just a bad review because the story/acting/etc isn’t up to scratch.

Maybe it seems to easier to work out where your taste and the reviewer’s taste overlap and diverge - if they gave a sci-fi a bad review but you love sci-fi, chances are it still might be enjoyable to you. It’s harder to do that when someones has a political or philosophical issue with a film, so I think we can tend to give more weight to critiques that focus on those areas?

Not a criticism of course, I do exactly the same thing. Just, still a pity.

So much fat shaming - and to characters that are completely average-to-slim! If they think she has huge thighs then I don’t know what their baseline expectations are …

(Not that it’s less problematic if it happens to larger characters, but in this example it literally didn’t make sense as well as being shitty)

The more I think about Roma, the more baffled I am at people lauding it so much. Its good, but I cannot believe how many 5 star reviews its getting

Reckon Cuaron’s just been bumped in to that infallible tier of auteurs where people will gush about whatever he puts out even if it’s bang on a 7 or 8/10

I think the one thing it does have is it doesnt feel like a Netflix film.theyve always seemed a bit cheap to me before but this is very cinematic. But the story itself is just…its been told many times before. It looks good but theres nothing that spectacular in it.

I dunno, maybe it is one for the big screen, but whilst its a nice homage to the French new wave type style, thats just it. I think it is a victim of its own hype

When I heard Kermode’s review, I could tell he liked it more cause of who made it. As much as I enjoy hearing him , he really does have his favourites and it showed here

Idk both my parents cried at Roma so it’s a lot more affecting than people are giving it credit for. Just a pretty powerful, low key, spectacular looking family drama.

Obviously there’s no universal standard for what counts as affecting, just pointing out that it had a very visceral effect on quite a lot of the audience

Dreams of a Life (albeit an incredibly difficult to watch one)

Cleo From 5 to 7 is really great. Maybe she isnt working class, but well worth it, and Roma is heavily influenced by it

Oh Still Lives Distant Voices as well

Four Weddings and a Funeral is still great though, and Notting Hill is worth it just for Rhys Ifans and the Horse and Hound bit.

Oh wait, he didn’t direct those did he? Ah well, my point still kind of stands!

Real Women Have Curves.

Amazing how people never use this line of argument when they really like the film in question. Nobody ever says ‘sure, Phantom Thread was one of my favourite films of the year, but I reckon most of the raves were just pretending to love it because it’s Paul Thomas Anderson!’

(I have heard that opinion actually but I fully agree with your post)

Oh crap. Thanks though

Oh actually, no I haven’t

Wonderland is great, don’t rate Winterbottom in general, but that film is exceptional.
