I read a tweet that said the Erasmus stuff is because they literally don’t want young people going abroad and finding out other places are good which sounds absurd but I wouldn’t actually be shocked if there was something in it…

Think shrinking the peasants’ horizons has been on the mind of the Tory leadership for some time now actually. The next stage of the project requires the populace to be fully returned to forelock-tugging servants and chimney sweeps with no expectation of things getting any better. Only instead of working for land and factory owners, they’ll all be contracted to Amazon and Uber.

Don’t want to give them a taste of the good life outside this hellscape

Think it’s actually more depressing to say:

Nah, one way or another, this will be about making money from their own version.

Well exactly

Also a possibility it was some part of the negotiations

‘ok! If you give us 3 extra fish we’ll quit erasmus!’

‘…sure’

Doesn’t really make sense for either side for the UK to leave erasmus, just blatant nationalism and wanting to charge fifty grand for a three year course in hockey studies in Loughborough

as someone who has never had a spanish number because of the no roaming charges and everyone using whatsapp thing made it pointless - FFS. didn’t really consider that.

Yep, especially in schools. They’re constantly trying to cut out anything that doesn’t fit into Mr Gradgrind’s syllabus and can’t be quantified with meaningless statistics.

At one point I was teaching DT, and they were simultaneously bribing me with a bursary to work as an non-PGCE teacher and get the qualification on the side, while trying to cut the subject out. I found myself being told things like “you don’t need to actually let them screenprint anything, they just need to know enough to answer an exam question about how you might screenprint something”. I had all the stuff in the cupboard, I just wasn’t really allowed to use it with the kids.

They can still do that, in fact they would’ve been able to charge more fees than before for eu students and keep Erasmus, which is just the 1 or 2 semester exchange program

They’ve also been trying to edge out Modern Foreign Languages, and the take-up rates for A-level have plummeted.

That’s true too, just figured this would be more about filling spaces with outside-eu students they can charge anything for (or of course the always possible ‘blind spite’ rationale)

Genuinely never heard of Ed Davey

he’s from the ‘‘intimidated by life’’ wet wing of the liberals and not the ‘‘torys with record collections’’ wing, still a bit of a knobend

contracts? no it’ll be queueing up at 7am every day in hope of a 15 hour shift at the new minimum wage of £3/hr

(ten minute unpaid break to neck a pint of huel included as your ‘benefit’ maybe)

Tories are definitely not going to allow the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists on the school syllabus

Davis, eh?
