we have to ask ourselves how a jihadi stan and churnalist fired by the daily mail for being too much of a psychopath is now supplying the bbc political editor with EHRC documents without this being mentioned at all

Aside from the “will it spoil the ballot” question, I mainly take issue with the fact that it will supposedly force the candidate to confront the issue. The only confrontation will be the rival candidates and their agents debating with the returning officer over the ballot, on the count floor (no press or anything), it’s not exactly forcing anyone to make a public statement or anything. It’s far less effective for getting the candidate to openly discuss the topic than just asking a question at hustings or something.

was gonna suggest everyone just go over to the Great things posted on social media thread, but that’s mostly Guinness chat these days

i guess maybe for the individual voter its a visual way of demonstrating their qualified support, both in the moment at the count but also by taking a photo and sharing.
i dunno maybe it’s just what they need to make them feel better in a very difficult decision - ie voting for a person with views you disagree with vs voting against a party you know will massively further equal rights across the board

and what if there were scores/hundreds of them? would become a story then i guess

we could make a reading list and a list of organisations that’ll need support

I get that, I can understand why they’d want to do it.

I wonder if there’ll be a movement telling people to vote Labour but write AS in the box and say you specifically disagree with their handling of anti-Semitism.

oh god

Mad to think how quick they were to dig up the fact that the Dad (rightly) having a go at Johnson in the Hospital a few months back was a Labour activist as well.

Off by a few days. Still think we’ll see another of these just so happening to land on the 11th.

Yeah my friend is “having” to vote for a very TERF-y candidate in an SNP/Tory seat, not a fun choice to make

Joanna Cherry? :frowning:

Thatsa bingo.

Labour aren’t far off but you can see why someone would be concerned by risking it with these figures

SNP Joanna Cherry 17,575
Conservative Miles Briggs 16,478
Labour Foysol Choudhury 13,213

added pain is that labour aren’t that far behind in 3rd there. nobody thinks of these places as three way marginals when they are really. can totally understand the fear of letting a tory in of course

edit, ah your edit beat my post

Yeah it’s hard to balance all the different factors. But if it was ever fair to vote for someone who was good as a person but represented a crap party*, then surely you can justify voting for someone crap that represents a party you still broadly support.

*Not sure this ever was really the case, but it was at least somewhat defensible in the past when things seemed more moderate than they are now

This is my gf’s constituency - it stretches out into the very pricey bits of the city fringe (Currie, Balerno, Bonaly etc), which I’m going to presume is largely Tory Unionist territory. Suspect you may see a decline in their share this time given they’re not acting the safe pair of hands they were three years ago.

(Don’t think Labour will win it, though)

What’s the difference here between Labour Minority (which implies a hung parliament) and “no overall control”?
