Isn’t Grady from Will Haven on this too?

Could you maybe use your contacts, get yourself a guest producer slot on the new one? I want to hear what they’re like with a better guitar sound and audible bass.

Talking of Far and the Deftones…

The last 4 tracks are not very good. I usually stop after Battle-axe. Everything up to that point is good to amazing. I like Deathblow and Battle-axe but agree they are both missing something

i mean stephen carpenter is so far down the amp sim rabbit hole by now i don’t think there’s any coming back from that, you just gotta embrace it. and also i think that they all hate eachother so much by now that they’re never in the same room when they record so it’s pretty much take it as it comes.

yeah he does the screaming I think

Love ST but it does turn into a slog at the end, the sequencing is weird with the two ambient tracks so close together. Some of their best heavy songs are on that album though.

Also, they relegated this to a b-side and its brilliant.

And from the sounds of this, Eros was going to be a huge return to form. Really like the more pronounced lead guitar.

I enjoy the music of the band deftones

It goes…

White Pony > Around The Fur > Diamond Eyes > Deftones > Saturday Night Wrist > Koi No Yokan > Adrenaline > Gore

for me Clive.

They’re one of the hardest bands to do the album ranking thing. Here are my dumb thoughts on it:

  • White Pony and Around the Fur are at the very top. All-time classics.
  • S/T would be at the top too if the ending sequence were stronger but it sort of falls apart just after the halfway mark. It’s a great feel-like-shit album.
  • Gore and Saturday Night Wrist are basically complete opposites. Gore is their most consistent album since White Pony, but not my ideal direction for them and lacking knockout songs. SNW is very inconsistent but the heights are them at their best in their ideal style. Hole in the Earth, Rapture, and UUDD… feel like a best album that never was.
  • Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan are the weakest, but each has a couple of great songs. They get into “reusing bits from old songs” territory and while I can’t explain why, they leave me with that feeling of eating too much of my grandpa’s sugar free candy as a child.

why does everyone dislike saturday night wrist? i think its easily in the upper echelon of their catalog. beware -> cherry waves is a helluva back to back combo. reviere is a perfect album closer. the singles were great. love the riff on combat. xerces and kimdracula are great. plus the production is a little different… i love it but ymmv.

The songs are clearly written by a band who didn’t like each other nor believe in what they were writing. As I’ve said before it’s been clear for years they want to distanve themselves from it, as they barely play any of those songs, even the few really good ones.

how is that clear? if it wasnt public knowledge would you really hear that in the music? and them distancing themselves from it / not playing it live has nothing to do with the quality imo. could just be they dont want to re-live that time with eachother. which songs would you say arent good on it (besides pink cellphone)?

There are a load of clunky bits that don’t fit very well, like they were all giving their proper collaborative minds into writing it. It’s been a while since I’ve heard it, so i’m not that hot on examples, but i remember somes like Rats Rats Rats having great riffs that just sort of stop and don’t go anywhere.

Good songs:

Hole In The Earth
Rapture
Beware
Cherry Waves
Xerces
Rats!Rats!Rats!
Kimdracula

Meh to bad songs:

Mein
U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start
Pink Cellphone
Combat
Rivière

So it’s better than I remember then

I meant, like they weren’t collaborating.

Great post, but I disagree with almost everything you’ve written! Diamond Eyes the weakest? Really?

I definitely need to revisit it, it’s been a long time. I remember loving Rocket Skates and Prince, even if the latter was very reminiscent of RX Queen.
