Also not a friend but my Grandma would buy real bread but get it sliced thinly by the baker and then put real butter from her anchor (?) butter dish with the little men on it, was the greatest.

Eggs in general freak me out so sometime I even have to throw the delicious salty mashed up whites in the bin. Didn’t help my…phobia? by looking at an image of what eggs look like before fully developed.

Oh god, my nan used to have those tinned potatoes. I loved them! Absolutely nothing like any potato that ever existed.

I liked the sheep’s milk butter that i used to eat on bread with honey at my nan’s house in Athens. Probably wasn’t that easy to find in the UK in the 80s and early 90s so we never had it at home. She used to buy koulourakia for me as well.

I don’t know why Wikipedia thinks they’re pastries, they’re definitely biscuits

I’ve always been a complete weirdo and struggle to eat in anyone’s house that isn’t family or as an adult a very, very close friend.

I do always remember being about three and my childminder taking me and the other kids to her mum and dad’s house and getting us Greggs sausage rolls. Think that was the first time I’d ever had one. Can still remember the taste. The pastry used to be different. Much flakier and buttery. Good times.

Time for a boring Angel Delight anecdote?
You bet.

Growing up we had Angel Delight once a week, on Wednesdays. We had a very specific rota of meals which we never deviated from and Angel Delight was Weds pudding (after Cauliflower Cheese main course… growing up in an 80s veggie house was hard).

Anyway my Dad would make Angel Delight and then offer us a range of accompanying delights:

Squirty Squirty cream - fairly self explanatory.
Sand - hundreds and thousands
Stick - one of those cylindrical wafer type things. no idea what they’re really called.

Anyway, every Weds he’d call out to each family member in turn as he served up “squirty? sand? Stick?” and eventually this started to grate on me. I’d tell him that I was " squirty and stick but no sand". This was the same thing I’d had last Wednesday and, in fact, every Wednesday since the very dawn of time. I like squirty; I like stick (save it) and I don’t like sand. The answer is always the same! Why does he still need to ask.

Anyway, he said that if he bothered to learn what we had every week it would take up valuable brain space that could be used for other, more important information. So that told me, I guess.

when I went to Adam’s house down the road (1995/6) once, we got to have Microchips. also we had chocolate and strawberry sauce on ice cream, the kind that goes hard and cracks.

I’d never had either of those things.

also, I went to Martin’s house for tea in 1996, and we had steak and kidney pie for tea? I thought this was just an odd name or something, because obviously people didn’t eat kidneys… right?

my sisters both have fond memories of having ‘toast pizza’ when we were younger. wasn’t even ketchup under the cheese, was chopped up herby tinned toms.
