How far back do they go? Are they visible when you’re wearing them?

Sorry for all the questions. I probably won’t get them anyway because I don’t really want to have to deal with wearing them at work

I had my old metal one replaced as it had started to leach into the surrounding tooth. The tooth is still stained quite grey but looks better than when it had metal in it (not that it mattered anyway, as it’s near the back).

I’ve been going to the same dentist for over 25 years now, twice a year. I honestly never really thought anything of it, just something I always felt the need to do. I broke a tooth playing football (of the American variety) when I was younger and had a debilitating fear of getting it replaced at the time, but it was fine. Ever since then I just go for regular checkups/cleanings. Understand people having fear of seeing them, but I’ve always felt that its better to have regular checkups so they can dissect the route of the problem before it gets worse.

Also my dentist knows I like the Grateful Dead and will always play them when I see him. Big points.

Is the dentist covered by health insurance in the states?

Yes. I’ve only had to pay out of pocket like 400 dollars for the tooth replacement at the time in the 25 years I’ve been going.

Last time I went, my dentist advised me to book the next appointment in 36mths time. So yeah, that was slightly weird.

They must have known those chompers were top notch!

Probably worth saying that I had braces as a kid. Early on I had a plastic removable one to bring my two front teeth together then as a teenager I had four molars removed and the full traintracks yanking my teeth round straight until I was 18 maybe 19. After that I had retainers I was meant to wear at night but I got tired of them when I went to Uni (aged 19).

This might explain why I haven’t found my tooth cleaning as horrible as you guys I guess as there aren’t many cracks and crevices in my mouth.

I guess this is London privilege because obviously Eastman Dental School is right there in King’s Cross so getting free kids’ work like that was just one of those things that was available.

I also had fissure sealing in my teeth while at uni on advice from my dentist because of it being free at the time (as I was a student).

I would always advise anyone to get fissure sealing if you can. Will save you so much money.

I really fancied my previous dentist when I lived in east London. To the point that I follow him on Instagram .

It’s water innit, a thin stream of really high-pressure water

Badly need my teeth scaled but my dentist has been shut for everything but essential/emergency work since the start of the pandemic. Rang them last week and they said a dental hygenist could do it but it would be £60 instead of the usual £16. Fuck that.

Have no problem going to the dentist. Although when the scaling starts I find it so unpleasant that I unconsciously stop breathing and shock myself when I remember I need to take a breath

Went the other week and dentist said I had to start using these small blue spikey stick things between my teeth and that my guns may bleed first few times.

She then gave me a mirror to watch her show me how to us them. Literally lay there in absolute agony whilst she made every bit of gum pour with blood whilst I watched my eyes look terrified through a mirror.

Have to go back in 3 weeks for fillings.

Hate teeth hate dentists

Had to go for an emergenct filling earlier in the year, that was exctiting. Didnt really get a good look re fancying them.

This topic is still too raw for me

I hadn’t been for a similar amount of time. Made a reluctant NY resolution to get my teeth sorted and accidentally got an appointment on the 3rd January… I did need some work doing and a clean but now they’re great. Definitely do it!

Haven’t been to the dentist in about ten years but as soon as they closed cos of Covid I had a massive urge to go. Once I’m vacced up I will but I’m dreading the £££ involved with any work that might need done. Can you refuse certain treatment if you want?

For most of my life my dentist has been a seventy year old guy who went to school with my uncle, originally started to train for the priesthood before he met his wife and likes to favour his patients with his controversial opininons on the hot topics of the day at the point where they have absolutely no way to reply. All soundtracked by Radio 4.

Of course that gives me a rager every time!

ive not been in years and im scared but i reaally should go

can you make an appointment but request a nice dentist not a mean judgemental one? should be an option
