Dumb american question of the day.

What does council house bidding mean? Like a lottery for housing?

It might vary across the country for the exact particulars, but where I am if you somehow manage to meet the eligibility to get on the housing waiting list (very strict criteria for this), then weekly you get to bid on available properties that are available through the council to rent. How high you finish in the bidding depends on a score they give you (but you don’t get to see) which is calculated based on your ‘band’ of priority (for example I am band C for ‘lacking one bedroom’), the date you got put on the list, and other factors like medical need awards.

I’ve been on the list for four years now but getting nowhere near the top even still and with medical evidence bumping up my score a bit :(. Council housing is my only option to move out of my mum’s (where I moved with R when he was tiny and we escaped his dad) because I’m unemployed/unable to work and can’t afford private rents as they way outstrip what I’d get in housing benefit.

Tl;dr social housing in this country is severely fucked and there is only a fraction of the supply there should be because torys.

Thanks for the response. Was just curious. Sounds like a difficult situation, but routing for you and R to get one!

Is it literally a lottery?

site certificate has expired apparently @admins

Why am I still up?

10 days ago, too. Interesting, my browser will usually shout at me if i try to visit a site that’s got an invalid SSL cert. Might have some strange thing to do with the shitty anti-virus software I’ve got on this work machine.

Edit: unless i got the warning 10 days ago, thought ‘fuck off computer, don’t you tell me what to do’, and saved an override. Caveat: not a CYBERSECURITY XPERT

mine usually does the same. i use two different browsers and neither of them warned me or anything.

i think the forum is hosted by discourse so might be worth asking them @admins

See my post slightly above in response to NY, it is a bit more structured than that in how they assess priority, but also not particularly transparent so sometimes feels like it is a lottery.

Aye, never put together a Discourse site so fook knows. However, an invalid SSL cert is an invalid SSL cert however you look at it.

Ah sorry, I missed that.

That sounds really degrading and utterly dehumanising. Also strikes me as the kind of battle royale tories would love to hold live and sell tickets for. I’m sorry.

Let’s go for a combo. @moderators am bedbound for a few days (hooray covid) and whilst this is not my area of expertise, it is a relatively easy thing to do so if anything technical needs doing (although I think colinzeal is a mod and he’s au fait with this stuff?) then feel free to HMU. kalgeese and WR I definitely owe you two GBOLs favours.

Lately i’d have been like ‘at least i get some time off work’ but I’ve just started 6 days of AL FFS.

AL, Rich, AL!!!

Mrs numbers is/was going away and i was going to absolutely blitz the house in ‘live laugh love’ vinyl stickers and ‘gin o clock’ stuff and it’s all ruined

That’s timing!

you’ve got the rona?!

gets bigger violin out

this was leave that i was only able to take because i cancelled all my time off over christmas because if i didn’t take some time off now i was going to lose it. had my crystal ball been working i could have kept the christmas holiday AND had this time off

‘lose it’ as in ‘become too unstable to work’
