I mean it’s a good idea really though isn’t it because if someone’s called the wrong number they’ll know immediately instead of the awkward “hello?” “er…hello? Is erm Jimmy there?” “no I think you’ve got the wrong number” “oh ok thanks bye!”

If you mean that having a phone was a clear sign of being middle class, then I couldn’t agree more.

But it is going to be close to the number they dialled, the person saying it will be reeling it off quickly and you wouldn’t be expecting it really, not to cross-reference it.

You should say 'this is Tristram Balsam-Tissues, Solicitor, Liphook, speaking".

no I mean worrying about how you might seem to strangers over the phone was

anyone else used to have a dedicated telephone seat/ table thing in the hall?

Ours wan’t quite as “fancy” as this one, but you get the idea

I always just say “hello?” on the phone it’s probably the area of my life I’m the least creative with

When I was a kid everyone in our family used to answer the phone with full area code and phone number. I can still remember the intonation my dad used to say it.

I do with my personal but at work I am a ‘Hello, Tristram speaking’.

I’ve started saying ‘hello you’re through to aggpass’ phone, Aggpass speaking’

Remember a shop in Luton that got confused and added the 1 at the end of the area code, not after the 0. Uh oh!

we also had a book with phone numbers in like this on the table - you slid the slider to the letter you wanted to look up

That looks familiar, don’t know if we have one around when I was a kid or not though.

this seems kind of ingenious, how did it work?

yes they did and so did I.

I also remember the two digit area codes

My da still does this. He would yell at me and my sister if we didn’t

the pages kind of had “steps” on them, or were different widths or something

I do know that if 7 year old Tim fucked around with it it stopped working properly

My dad still does this. Sometimes when I call and he answers I repeat the number as well at the same time and we have a right old laugh.
