Not read the link but I’m guessing birds are an evolution of small dinosaurs who survived the cataclysm. Just as not all apes evolved into humans, not all dinosaurs would evolve into birds. That’s my take, anyway.

Apes evolved from a common ancestor we didn’t evolve from apes all of this common ancestor evolved into something it has ceased to exist.

Anyway your point stands would have been interesting seeing how Dino’s would have evolved if less of them had died out. We could still have giant bird like creatures roaming around the world!
