DIS forum 2019 - Albums of the year - RESULTS

And here’s a list of the average scores for each album (minimum of 3 votes), which often produces a more leftfield/interesting list. Big winner here was Cate Le Bon with a whopping average of 4.4 (3 x first places, a second place and a third) and so not only wins this list but also the much coveted Adebeshi Shank award for the artists liked a lot by a not many people. I guess lots of us need to go and listen to her (myself included).

Stenny,Kelsey Lu and Oso Oso also drop into the top 10.

1 Cate Le Bon – Reward (4.4 points)
2 Nick Cave (4)
3 Richard Dawson – 2020 (4)
3 Stenny – Upsurge (4)
5 Big Theif - U.F.O.F (3.8)
6 Purple Mountains ‘Purple Mountains’ (3.8)

=7 Oso Oso - Basking in th (3.7)

11 W. H. Lung - Incidental Music (3.5)
12 Holly Herndon – Proto (3.4)

Big Thief watch: 1st place and 15th place in the main list for their two albums. So no harm done releasing two albums this year; sure Adrienne would have been gutted if they’d missed out on top spot because of sharing the votes between two albums. But there was presumably some tactical voting – two thirds of people who had Two Hands in their list didn’t include UFOF. And of the three people who had both albums in their list all had Two Hands below UFOF. But no-one had both albums in their list with two Hands higher than UFOF. I’ll leave the analysis of that to the Big Thief enthusiasts.

And with that, unless there are any questions, my work here is done for another year. It’s been fun. See you again for the same at the end of 2020.

This is first time in the 12 years I’ve been here that the winner is not only an album I’ve never heard, it is an album I’ve not even heard of, by an artist I’ve also never even heard of.

Wow.

surprised you’ve not seen people on here going on about them non stop though

thanks @Prob500!

Nice work as ever, @Prob500

Good list, mostly, always forget to vote in these things. Thanks prob.

Tho think the only thing my votes would have done would be to bring Wand up a little bit

Would have been well deserved though

good album but i got more into her last two. this one seems to have reached a new level of attention though which is cool.

quite enjoyed her EP with Bradford Cox this year as well though it’s a much messier affair

Some top, top work here!! I’ve got 3 of the top 100!
Need to be cooler in 2020.

Chemical Brothers are in there twice though

I own a whole 7 of them, but I’ve enjoyed plenty more

Thanks for doing this. A lot of hard work. Well done.

aaaaany chance of a spreadsheet? I didn’t get into nearly enough albums this year so may check out a few from this list.

But cheers @prob500 this is dead good

Thanks again for putting this together! I always look forward to this each year.

Even though I didn’t get to vote for it, I’m happy Big Thief got the top spot because U.F.O.F. is great (as is Two Hands) and has been a strong AOTY contender since it came out in May. Definitely my artist of the year, even though there were a few albums that snuck by at the end.

The only thing I voted for that got in was Strange Ranger, which as far as I can tell got exactly two votes and both were for first place. Such a great band.

I’m truly baffled that no one else voted for Pile, who released an instant classic as far as I’m concerned. Also confused about the lack of love for Tropical Fuck Storm given how well the debut was received.

Don’t think I’ll ever understand the love for Nick Cave and have no idea how Kim Gordon even placed, but that’s probably best saved for the next hot takes thread that comes up.

Great year overall.

Thanks for this @Prob500 as ever. I think that’s a pretty decent list- broadly consistent with the critical consensus with a few DIS twists like the high placing for Richard Dawson and Girl Band which are both very good things. The high placing for Self Esteem is a bit of a surprise (to me at least). I thought it was ok, but it obviously got some momentum behind it on here.

The slight surprise might be the relatively low placing for FKA Twigs - maybe the fact it was released relatively late in the year and after an amazing October counted against it. I’m guessing a lot of the journalists who have put it nearer the top of their lists had access to it a lot earlier than we did (it is a bit of a slow burner, I think).

v good album. she’s been doing weirder stuff with Body/Head up to now so it’s nice to get something much more direct and enjoyable from her
