DiS Users' April 2023 Album Of The Month - THE RESULTS

Yeah, love that Be Aggressive bit. I think it’s tracks 5 and 6 that leave me ambivalent. Haven’t listened to the album enough to fully appreciate that the rest of the album isn’t like those two tracks.

Oh. Bandcamp had it as part of their write up for April albums, but I see now that digital was March, physical April.

  1. Wednesday

  2. The National

I’m so off the pace this year. Not been anything I’ve heard this year that’s properly clicked with me… with the exception of Yaeji’s album, which I love, so…

  1. Yaeji - With A Hammer

Feel like you should definitely try Wednesday

Oh yeah? Will get on that.

Grungy twangy alt rock, for the elevator pitch

Got it on right now. You know me so well JP!

Yeah I haven’t scratched the surface on his back catalogue but the album last year (as the Greg Foat Group) was one of my favourites of the year. Really enjoyed this one too so think I need to start digging through what else he’s done.

  1. Austere - Corrosion of Hearts
  2. Tim Hecker - No Highs
  3. Bell Witch - Future’s Shadow Part 1: The Clandestine Gate
  4. Antrisch - Expedition II: Die Passage
  5. Bonjour Tristesse - Against Leviathan!

Thought it would take something special to beat Wednesday…and then something special came along.

Seven very good albums this month. Struggled to get down to five:

  1. Josienne Clark - Onliness
  2. Wednesday - Rat Saw God
  3. LIES - Lies
  4. El Michels Affair & Black Thought - Glorious Game
  5. Everything But The Girl - Fuse

  1. The National - First Two Pages of Frankenstein
  2. Bodywash - I Held The Shape While I Could

Also enjoyed Rodrigo y Gabriela, Jessie Ware, John Andrews & The Yawns, Daughter and North Americans.

Thanks for bringing Mark Barrott’s new album to my attention. I loved his ‘sketches from an island’ albums but to be honest i’d forgotten he existed! Got it on now, couple of tracks in and it sounds absolutely lovely.

  5. Tunic - Wrong Dream

Honourable Mention:
Autobahn - Ecstasy of Ruin

And to be honest those are the only six records that I’ve checked out this month as I’ve either still been obsessing over already released 2023 albums or playing catch up with others. Fallen hard for Yaeji’s With a Hammer which is just full of bangers and reminds me a bit of Jessy Lanza. Clicked much more with Tim Hecker’s No Highs than his last two records which felt more like curios. Discovered Sarathy Korwar through @Octobadger submitting that glorious almost ten minute opener in Music League. El Michels Affair & Black Thought’s Glorious Game is stacked with funky goodness. Tunic’s Wrong Dream has all noise and fuzz that I love in Metz and USA Nails. And finally need to spend some more time with the Autobahn’s Ecstasy of Ruin but it does icy synth-y post punk really well.

Pleased to have been able to introduce him! He’s an artist who I think I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve heard by so would recommend just picking anything from his back catalogue to dig further.
