DiS Users' April 2024 Album Of The Month

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

My choices:

1. Dana Gavanski - Late Slap

2. Blue Bendy - So Medieval

3. The Red, Pinks and Purples - Unwishing Well

4. Bodega - Our Brand Could Be Yr Life

5. Bob Vylan - Humble As The Sun

  1. Chanel Beads - Your Day Will Come

  2. Jane Weaver - Love In Constant Spectacle

Best month for me for a while. My top five may not be AOTY contenders but all very strong 8½/10 or 8/10 albums.

Dana Gavanski isn’t an artist I’ve listened to much recently despite her Lexington gig from a couple of years ago being absolutely brilliant. Her new album is also absolutely brilliant with lovely melodies, vocals and warmth throughout. I’ve had it on repeat very often all month. A definite must listen.

The Blue Bendy album works really well. Usually this style isn’t my cup of tea but this is just great stuff.

The Reds, Pinks and Purples releases his 14th album of the year and it’s a very good one. Uncommon Weather was my top pick of 2022. This new one is the closest he’s come to that one for me.

The Bodega album is also very good as is Bob Vylan. I also enjoyed Chanel Beads and Jane Weaver. I probably haven’t heard many releases from 19th April yet as I’ve been revisiting Hadestown a hell of a lot (pardon the pun) as Anais Mitchell is at Rough Trade East doing a Hadestown thing next month.

Best month for me with seven very strong albums from just the first two weeks in April.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked. Not sure what’s out tomorrow. I might give Iron & Wine a try. I’ll see what you guys are listening to.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 5th May and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Doh, I didn’t know about that, as it turns out I’m not following her on Songkick. I’ve added myself to the Dice waiting list, for whatever good that will do!
I still need to get around to seeing the musical version of Hadestown.

So so, so good

Thought April had been quite low-key until I came to do this…

1: Still House Plants - If I Don’t Make It, I Love U
2: Claire Rousay - Sentiment
3: Hoyah - Set + Setting
4: Guests - “I Wish I Was Special”
5: Bianca Scout - Pattern Damage

Still House Plants is phenomenal, the kind of innovative, eccentric, unique guitar record a million bands think they are making, but this one actually did. Deconstructed to the point of it being near impossible to piece it back together, but so many amazing bits, rather than songs. Truly challenging. Claire Rousay I saw described as the most 2024 record imaginable, and it’s kinda true. Beautifully numb, the non-songs giving the most hope. It’s really addictive, and a bit sad. Hoyah is a new one on me, thousands of saxaphone samples edited and re-edited together, kinda Jazz, kinda IDM, kinda neither, some really beautiful sections, some glitchy sections… Guests is really cool, bit 80’s alt, bit talky, but really covers a uniform mood really well, certainly one to get lost in. And Bianca Scout is one of the best around at the moment, a cool, unique voice who I’ve been a fan of for a while - now she’s made a really great record. Such a cool month.

Couldn’t find room for Chanel Beads, Wolfgang Tillmans (magic this!), Bullion or Naemi either. All very very very good records. Plus great Dawuna and Skee Mask EP’s…
