DiS Users' April 2025 Album Of The Month

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

My choices:

1. Julien Baker & TORRES - Send A Prayer My Way

2. Valerie June - Owls, Omens and Oracles

3. Ribbon Skirt - Bite Down

4. Penelope Trappes - A Requiem

5th ? Samia - Bloodless

I loved the Julien Baker and TORRES album. Some brilliant tunes and lyrically it’s great too. I saw them performing last month at Rough Trade East which was fantastic. I got to say a quick hello and thank you and I got the album print signed which I later framed but yet to hang up because I’m lazy. I like their signatures; good writing skills and their autographs complement the font on the album.

Baker is probably the bigger artist of the pair but I’ve been a TORRES fan for over a decade and Don’t Go Puttin’ Wishes In My Head was hands down my single of the year in 2021. It was great meeting them and a lovely night overall.

The Valerie June album is brilliant. Her album The Order Of Time was my top pick of 2017 and the new one doesn’t disappoint.

I like the 90s feel of Ribbon Skirt and Penelope Trappes’ album is impressive too but probably not as strong as her album called Three.

I really like the tracks released on the Samia album to be released tomorrow and so have put it provisionally as 5th place. I’m seeing her live next Thursday and so I definitely will have a number of listens through between its release tomorrow and the gig. Her previous album was my AOTM a few years ago.

My most listened to album of April is Sharp Pins - Radio DDR who I hadn’t heard of until their Best New Album on Pitchfork a few weeks ago. I’ve been listening to this album endlessly this month but its release date varies looking it up. Anyone enjoying this too?

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked. Not sure what’s out tomorrow. I’ll see what you guys are listening to.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 4th May and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Got three (Juana Aguirre, Lullahush, duendita) locked in hard and EOY-bound, fairly wide open after that. Last couple weeks felt light to me.

Got 3 big ones to go this Friday.

Jeff Goldblum and who else? :slightly_smiling_face:

Hasn’t felt like a standout month although Easter school holidays have meant I’ve been a bit out of touch. A few demanding a re-listen over the next few days:
Adrian Younge - Something About April III
Barker - Stochastic Drift
Anika - Abyss
Gamelan Salukat x Jan Kadereit - Áshira
Franky Wah - The Revival, Vol. 2
The Ophelias - Spring Grove
Miki Berenyi Trio - Tripla
The Nightingales - The Awful Truth
Yann Tiersen - Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour
Penelope Trappes - A Requiem
Lucy Railton - Blue Veil

And some on my list for tomorrow - the tracks released so far from Maria Somerville’s new one sound great, there’s Light-Space Modulator (Marlene from Gnod with Shackleton) which is sounding interesting, and then Emma-Jean Thackray adding more pop and soul to the jazz sound on her second album.

Think this was released last year and the release this month was an expanded version or something along those lines.

Got 4 albums out tomorrow that will all probably be included. 2 of which will be AOTY candidates.

I was hoping that this thread would alert me to lots of albums I’d missed in April given the paucity of my own choices but it hasn’t. Just, for me, one of those quiet months after the excellence of March.

  1. Momma - Welcome to my Blue Sky
  2. Maria Somerville - Luster
  3. Rebekka Karijord / Roomful of Teeth - The Bell Tower
  4. Valerie June - Owls, Omens and Oracles
  5. Waves Crashing - Effection
