Spent most of my month eotr listening…so I’ve not had chance to listen to many records (which I’ll surely like). Nonetheless:

  1. Nadine Shah: Holiday Destination
  2. Iron & Wine - Beast Epic
  3. Brand New - Science Fiction
  1. Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins
  2. QOTSA - Villains
  3. EMA - Exile in the Outer Ring

September is already a struggle

THE RESULTS:

1.Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins 34 points

2.EMA - Exile In The Outer Ring 24 points

3.Brand New - Science Fiction 23 points

4.Everything Everything - A Fever Dream 19 points

Joint 5th. Liars - TFCF
Queens of the Stone Age - Villians both on 11 points

Joint 7th. Girl Ray - Earl Grey
Sannhet - So Numb
The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding all on 7 points

Joint 10th. Dead Cross - Dead Cross
The Districts - Popular Malipulations both on 6 points.

I thought The War On Drugs would walk it as first place in August, The thread on their new album has over 100 replies and many posting on there seem to regard it very highly, even AOTY worthy. Maybe many of the those that posted there didn’t vote here. Glad a relatively small artist like EMA, who’s been around a while but can’t sell out the huge venues like those others on that list, is in second place.

Surprised Orc didn’t make it

More people need to listen to Mermaidens

Not heard of them. What sort of music is it? Link their best song on here if you can.

Coming out late in the month probably didn’t help TWOD score.

Perhaps, but EMA, Liars, Brand New and QOTSA came out on the last Friday of the month; the same day as TWOD.

I thought the Grizzly Bear album was unremarkable.

Thought Everything Everything would walk this, even though I’ve not heard it. Proper DiS band

I voted Grizzly Bear for #3 but I don’t disagree with you, it seems to be missing something compared to Shields. I like the way the second half of Shields feels like it’s building just to get to “Half Gate”, which to me is far and away the best song they’ve ever done. Nothing seems to come close to it on the new one.

They’re a Flying Nun band. Kinda rockier, edgier Warpaint…?

Dunno, that’s probably a lazy, borderline sexist description, just picking up on the female vocals. Probably not even all that rockier or edgier, either. At any rate, here’s Satsuma:

speaking of Warpaint:

Sounds ok. Her voice reminds me of Sharon Van Etten.

And you’ve just described my ideal band. Will investigate.

With you on Half Gate. I do like the new one but as a new comer to the band Shields and Veckatimest are doing it for me a lot more

Redundantly late to the party but wanted to give a shout out for Khalil - The Water we drink - new outfit from the When Saints go Machine frontman - more auto tune than I would dare to shake a stick out but if you can get past that and I did a bout half way in then I’d say its well worth a punt. Boomkat describes it as a being like a collaboration between Arca and Anohni, which is pretty accurate I think, It’s also like a darker, more reflective, more RnB When Saints go Machine.

For what it’s worth Rafael Anton Irassari - Shameless Years and Heinali & Matt Finney - How We Lived would have been my other picks.

Let me know what you think
