I don’t think my selections are going to ‘trouble the judges’ particularly this month, but this is what I have enjoyed most in August FWIIW:
UNKLE - The Road, Pt. 1. Enjoyable return to form which (largely) works.
Widowspeak - Expect the Best. New band to me; sounding more like Mazzy Star than, well, Mazzy Star. Nice vibe.
Ghostpoet - Dark Days & Canapes. Enjoyed GP’s first couple of albums, and this feels like a nice progression - so long as you enjoy Obaro’s ‘distinctive’ vocal style (I do).
This turned out to be a great month for new releases (thanks to the last couple of weeks) - almost as much so as March. Also really enjoyed Nadine Shah’s Holiday Destination, which has grown on me and deserves accolades for its lyrical content, but Iron & Wine and Jack Cooper disappointed a little.
Apanhador Só - Meio que tudo é um - amazing modern freaky bossa! Free on their website too.
King Gizz/Mild High Club - Sketches of Brunswick East - so glad they’ve returned to the Papier Mache Dream Balloon sound, I admire their frantic prog stuff but find this has much more replay value
War On Drugs - Deeper Understanding - expecting this to grow on me more, it’s pretty long and detailed and I feel like I’m only just getting to know it
I agree that this month was particularly tough - most other months Hammock, Liars and QOTSA would have made a very strong top three for me, but didn’t even feature thanks to other releases…
