Hard to rank this month.
- Palm Haze - Reve Blue
- Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops
- The Murder Capital - When I Have Fears
- Sleater-Kinney - The Center Won’t Hold
- Tool - Fear Innoculum
Strongest runner up: Modern Nature - How to Live (the first half isn’t doing much for me yet, but the second half is great. Sometimes it reminds me of a mixture of Beak> and Grizzly Bear maybe?)
2-4 might be better as a whole than my number one, but big chunks of the Palm Haze album are by far the most exciting release for me. Wildflower is already one of my favorite songs of the decade (9 minutes of fast, depressing, tense shoegaze), and Drop In reminds me a bit of Carnavas-era Silversun Pickups without the sadness. It has a great tempo change too that I wish went on forever. The next album has a chance to be really special.
The Tropical Fuck Storm album is fantastic as expected, and like the debut it’s bleak and catchy at the same time. I love the lyric style so much, I have no idea how they come up with all of that.
Big thanks to everyone voting for The Murder Capital, I’d never heard of them before and took a chance on it based on how much it was showing up. It’s great.
The Sleater-Kinney album exceeded my expectations, it’s already comfortably ahead of No Cities to Love and One Beat for me.
