DiS Users' August 2023 Album Of The Month - THE RESULTS

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

My choices:

1. Madder Rose - No One Gets Hurt Ever

2. Current Joys - LOVE + POP

3. Art School Girlfriend - Soft Landing

4. Emotional Oranges - STILL EMO

5. Laura Groves - Radio Red

The Madder Rose album is one of the year’s best for me. Admittedly I’m biased. A brilliant woozy and laid back album. Great to have them back at their best 30 years after their debut. The final track called I Want A New Me (GirlGhostBoyGhost) reminds me of a brilliant indie horror/rom-com called A Ghost Waits. I’d recommend the band, this album and that film to all.

I hadn’t heard of Current Joys before this album. A great album of varied genres ranging from bedroom indie to rap and a lot of the tracks are collaborative including artists like Lil Yachty and Lala Lala. Would appeal to those that like Bran Van 3000.

Not much between third, fourth and five. The Art School Girlfriend album is pretty good. No real standout tracks but works nicely listened through in one go. I’ve always enjoyed the summery sound of Emotional Oranges and Laura Groves’ is a nice sweet pop album.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 3rd September and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Provisionally, I’ve got this top 5:

Paul Rooney - Surface Industries II
BEEF - Beef
Connie Converse - Musicks
Madder Rose - No One Gets Hurt Ever
Mikaela Davis - And Southern Star

August is always a funny month with not so many new releases and not having as much time as usual to listen, but I do like this five, especially the Paul Rooney experimental one. Tomorrow’s new releases include a small handful that might trouble my scorers: Tenderlonious, Who Is She?, Ratboys. And I need to have another go at the Margaret Glaspy and Shamir albums.

What, there’s a new Madder Rose album? When did this happen and why did no one tell me :joy:

This album is indeed excellent. I’ve given it a fair few repeat listens.

I’ll move it to second place in my choices.

I only just listened to the Madder Rose because of this post and it is great so thank you :grinning:

Bloody hell, really thought that was Justin Sullivan when the vocals came in. Ironically NMA have a song called Vanity!

Mods - this needs to go in the August 25th new releases thread, can reassure everyone Madder Rose haven’t turned into New Model Army

  1. Deafcult - Future of Illusion
  2. The Hand - Volume 5 (EP)

Deafcult is a serious AOTY contender. A relentless, bleak, howling, pissed off statement of an album. It’s shoegaze, but it has more in common with METZ than anything that would come to mind when you hear the word shoegaze.

Maybe the most “What People Are Made Of” album closer since The Moon and Antarctica.

The Hand released a surprise EP nearly 6 years since their last one. It’s a little bit more polished than their earlier stuff but it’s still great. I highly, highly, highly recommend their entire discography (five EP’s total) to anyone who likes music that’s pissed off and thrashing (think Bullet Train to Vegas style Drive Like Jehu).

Ordering feels kinda arbitrary as I think I enjoyed all of these pretty much equally.
