…for me Clive.

Strong month with Joan As Policewoman, I’m With Her and Ezra Furman all bubbling under. I need to give the Loma record more time.

  1. The Soft Moon- Criminal
  2. Turnstile- Time & Space
  3. Chaos Echoes- Mouvement

That Chaos Echoes deserves far more attention than it’s had. An impressive, artistic metal album that still feels focused. Nuclear War Now is a cool label but I feel like Chaos Echoes are being slightly overlooked because the label is known for a particularly narrow brand of black/death metal.

The Soft Moon album rocks. So many great songs on it. Its top spot is cemented by how fucking good his live show is, to the point where the albums sound almost hollow by comparison after.

Turnstile is just fun as fuck. They’re so good at what they do. A fun, summery hardcore album that’s going to be played to death as soon as the weather gets good again. It does make me wonder what the point of Trapped Under Ice taking the same direction was on their last album, because it’s done a million times better here. Great pop hooks, great riffs throughout.

Not heard of your second and third choices. I’ll check them out.

Think I’ve settled on top three, so many good releases for me this month

  1. Hookworms - Microshift
  2. Ought - Room Inside the World
  3. Mint Field - Pasar de las Luces

Mint Field sneaked in at the end, helped by their awesome live show earlier in the week no doubt. Been rinsing the album ever since.

Honourable shoutouts to Ezra Furman, Hovvdy, Car Seat Headrest, Horseflies, the Orielles and MGMT. Any of them could have made it in to the top 3 at various points. Haven’t even get round to listening to the Superchunk album yet.

Another reasonable February. Struggled with my 3rd choice, but 1 and 2 locked in, so here we go (with apologies to Hour, still a lovely record that I will be listening to all year):

  1. Loma - s/t

  2. Olden Yolk - s/t

  3. Hovvdy - Cranberry

  1. Hour - Tiny Houses
  1. Hannah Epperson - Slowdown
Lovely album. Beautiful voice and looped violin with a bit of electronics. This song is easily my favourite of the year so far:
Cat's Cradle (Amelia) | Hannah Epperson

  2. Son Lux - Brighter Wounds
A pretty standard, but therefore pretty good, Son Lux album.
    Bandcamp

  3. 1921 - In My Veins
Swedish electronic duo, with the singer maybe reminding me of Antony and the Johnsons chap, or someone I can’t quite place. It was released electronically in November, but released on vinyl in February, which I bought when seeing them support Loney Dear.
    1921 - In my veins - YouTube

I’ve not spent that much time with anything else new this month, but really love the above three records. There was also a Babybird live album of their last gig which was good also.

Yeah it’s really something! Lush arrangements from the Kronos Quartet paired with carefully considered spoken word pieces from Laurie. Cheers for bringing this to my attention!

Also just listening to Efrim Manuel Menuck’s awesomely named latest solo offering Pissing Stars which came out earlier this month. Anyone else given this a spin?

  1. Ought - Room Inside the World
  2. Hookworms - Microshift
  3. Horseflies - Sea Control

Car Seat Headrest just misses out since I haven’t had a chance to fully digest the whole thing, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it passes one of these by the end of the year.

  1. Son lux - brighter wounds
  2. Dedekind cut - Tahoe
  3. Tape loop orchestra - before the light.
  4. Yann Novak - the future is a forward escape in to the past.
  1. Mint Field - Pasar de las Luces
  2. Rhye - Blood
  3. Poppy Ackroyd - Resolve

Honourable mention to S. Carey - Hundred Acres.

Ah what weren’t you so keen on? Kinda liked some the meandering drones along with the odd noise pop numbers like A Lamb in the Land of Payday Loans…

The whole thing. I love a dirgy drone album at the best of times, but this was utter toss

Fair! Different strokes etc

Indeed.
