Quiet month I guess but quite a few albums I enjoyed giving a couple of listens to but aren’t really keepers.

I really should resurrect my blog from its years long dormancy with some reviews or some such.

Go for it. You do enough write ups here that could just be expanded a little bit for a blog post.

And a great Yu Su review on RA today too.
Good record this.

Not listened to enough new stuff this month. Tends to happen in January - I’m still catching up on stuff from the beginning of the year plus the generally miserable weather makes me want to listen to old comforts. Anyway, top 4:

  1. Jasmine Sullivan - Heaux Tales
  2. Madlib - Sound Ancestors
  3. Bicep - Isles
  4. R.A.P Ferreira - Bob’s Son

Will try and check out some of the recommendations in here this week. Intrigued by Yu Su and Emeka Ogboh especially. Logic1000 was fun but only listened once so not sure it warrants a vote yet.

This is gonna be almost exactly mine too!

Skyway Man is excellent. Thanks for the tip - Spotify seems to think it came out in October though, has it had a proper UK release?

I’m don’t know about a physical album release or otherwise I’m afraid. Even the release date from the above links vary albeit by a week.

I had only heard of the artist/band after reading the MusicOMH review.

It scored 88 on Metacritic, but from only four reviews, and so it probably hasn’t had too much exposure.

I know everyone is missing live music but I would loved to have seen them tour this album at venues like The Lexington or Shacklewell. The songs seems more complex and layered than on the face of it and would have been great fun live. Even if the artist couldn’t pull off some songs live I would have definitely enjoyed the effort.

In no particular order, James Yorkston, Fergus McCreadie and Lice were my top 3.

Nice. Gonna check out Kessler

Goat Girl is as frustrating as it is excellent. They had the material for AOTM and an AOTY contender if they had cut 2 or so tracks.

Keep reading this as The Barenaked Ladies, I’m afraid

  1. Albertine Sarges - The Sticky Fingers
I’m really surprised by how much this album has crept up on me. I thought ‘Free Today’ was decent enough but I wasn’t bowled over by it, but I thought I’d give the record a cursory listen anyway. I’ve really fallen head over heels for it now though.
  2. Kessler - Ambivalent EP
I’m really chuffed that people are enjoying this EP so much. It just slaps. Banging it out in the car has really helped make driving into work at 5am slightly more tolerable.
  3. Jazmine Sullivan - Heaux Tales
There are enough excellent songs here for a banging five or six-track R&B EP but the individual tales weaved throughout means I’m looking forward to digging into this one more and more as a project.
  4. Logic1000 - You’ve Got the Whole Night to Go
A short and sweet house and techno EP.
  5. Hilang Child - Every Mover
I don’t really know how I feel about this album so I thought I’d give it a solitary point. Part of me likes it and part of me thinks it’s too saccharine for my taste. The middle part of the record really sags despite a strong start and finish.

Not fussed about…
Arlo Parks - Collapsed Sunbeams: Beige. I don’t think it deserved the kicking it got in the new releases thread (although the piano on ‘Hope’ does sounds like the BBC Film 20xx opening music/Jools Holland) but I cannot tell you a thing about this record. I think I’ve heard ‘Black Dog’, ‘Eugene’ and ‘George’ (I know it’s not on the record) quite a lot over the past two or three years and I have to think really hard just to remember how they go and what they sound like.
Bicep - Isles: Wallpaper music. I don’t get the love for this album at all. Instantly forgettable. I will give the lads the benefit of the doubt if they release a dancefloor/techno version but this one is as dull as dishwater.
Madlid - Sound Ancestors: I suspect this one is going to be a slow burner as hip-hop instrumental records often are for me.
R.A.P. Ferreira - Bob’s Son: The instrumentals just didn’t grab me sadly. Shame because I liked Purple Moonlight Pages but this one isn’t doing it for me.
Shame - Drunk Tank Pink: Another one that I’m going against the grain one but I think their debut album is far better than this one. It’s so much more exciting and visceral and the songs are just plain better to be honest. There are some highlights on the new album but nothing that hits the heights of their first. I didn’t read any of the hype for the debut though so make of that what you will…
