A pretty good 6 months. Top 4 are my definite top 4 and by a distance my most listened to and obsessed over albums of the year so far. 5-10 are in a slightly arbitrary order and there are a couple of others that could have slipped in here on another day.

Top 4! Thanks for the long list, lots to investigate there.

1: Nivhek - After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House
2: Tyler, The Creator - Igor
3: The Twilight Sad - It Won/t Be Like This All The Time
4: Thom Yorke - ANIMA

Helado Negro will definitely be my number one, but I thought I would have a listen to the ones I didn’t know from this list, and revisit some that I hadn’t given enough time to. Anyhow, it now means that I have a new playlist where I am listening to and loving the albums from these folk who otherwise might have passed me by:

Claire Cronin, Hayden Thorpe, Holly Herndon, Julia Jacklin, Petrels, Sasami, These New Puritans, Vanishing Twin

And have now also bought tickets to see Holly and Sasami later this year.

  1. Better Oblivion Community Centre
  2. Hatchie
  3. Twilight Sad
  4. Sharon Van Etten
  5. Self Esteem
  6. Carly Rae Jensen
  7. Foals
  8. Little Simz
  9. Ladytron
  10. James Blake

To be fair my top 2 are almost a tie. Such amazing records.

I’m going to try to keep this simple and not overthink it:

  1. The National - I Am Easy to Find
  2. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
  3. The Spielbergs - This Is Not the End
  4. Sasami - Sasami
  5. Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow
  6. The Twilight Sad - It Won/t Be Like This All the Time
  7. Thom Yorke - ANIMA
  8. Better Oblivion Community Center - S/T

If they had been on the list, Pile is probably my AOTY so far, or at the very least would be up there with The National and Big Thief.

Pedro the Lion would probably be between Sasami and Sharon Van Etten, with Priests and Mono being somewhere in there below them.

Fontaines DC, Black Midi, and Hatchie have their moments too but haven’t clicked as a whole.

Overall it feels kind of like an underwhelming year, but I’m hopeful that releases by Strange Ranger, Palm Haze, and Billy Corgan will strengthen it.
