Definite top 4:

  1. Black Country New Road
  2. Spiritualized
  3. Big Thief
  4. Beach House

Slightly arbitrary next choices:

  1. Porridge Radio
  2. Everything Everything
  3. Nilufer Yanya
  4. Sharon Van Etten
  5. Arcade Fire
  6. Let’s Eat Grandma

Not on the list and might have been in there somewhere (not in top 4 but amongst the 5-10 list):

Belle & Sebastian
Metronomy
Mitski
Tomberlin
Sigrid

I couldn’t quite get a full 10 out of the list, but hopefully a top 6 will count towards the overall vote. I think my actual top 6 or even 10 might look different, but some key albums are in there and the number 1 is very much the number 1! Thank you for organising the vote!

  1. Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
  2. Cult Of Luna - The Long Road North
  3. Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory
  4. The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention
  5. Bob Vylan - The Price Of Life
  6. Everything Everything - Raw Data Feel
  1. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There

  7. Everything Everything - Raw Data Feel
  8. Rosalía - MOTOMAMI
  9. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season
  10. The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention

A lot of my favourites from this year are missing from that list partly because I kept forgetting to vote Holodrum, Fumu, Blackhaine, Michael J Blood, 700 Bliss, Iceboy Violet, Real Lies being the current ones that leap to mind

EDIT: Murkage Dave knew I was missing one that I liked that wasn’t mentioned

@BMS1 Are discussion / links ok in this thread this year? Don’t want to accidentally screw up your tallying system.

Links, discussions and chats are more than welcome.

2022 hasn’t been that great so far for me. Nilüfer Yanya especially Bob Vylan have been far away my favourites so far but otherwise it’s been an ok year for releases.

I’ve really enjoyed gigs going ahead from artists that released albums in 2020/1 rather than current releases.

Not many of the albums I ACTUALLY loved so far this year, but from that list I’d say:

01 Caroline - S/T
02 Deliluh - Fault Lines
03 The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention
04 Cola - Deep In View
05 Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
06 Jenny Hval - Classic Objects
07 Just Mustard - Heart Under
08 Rosalía - MOTOMAMI
09 Warpaint - Radiate Like This
10 Nilüfer Yanya - PAINLESS

I feel like we all LISTENED to Arcade Fire but none of us liked it much. I wonder if we should change the wording of the individual week’s poll from ‘what did you listen to this week’ to ‘what did you love this week’. Because what I listen to and what I love differs an awful lot, particularly if it affects the options of a poll like this one.

agree, but that’s also a thing that just takes time. Jake Xerxes Fussell was I think my third or fourth “best” album of January - and then it turned out I kept listening to it over and over, and now it’s up with my very favourites of the entire year.

Totally get that. But also, I listened to Arcade Fire more times than any other album the week it came out, but decided I bloody hate it.

need to make sure you have an opinion on the d i s c o u r s e after all!

The wording on the weekly new releases polls (at least as long as I’ve been compiling them) is always ‘what did you like this week?’ or ‘what did you enjoy this week?’ or some other similar variation.

We probably all have different barometers for how much we need to like or enjoy something for it to get a tick (I know I dish out ticks like water) but that’s a different conversation!

  1. Charli XCX - Crash
  2. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum
  3. Brainwaltzera - ITSAME
  4. Kurt Vile - (watch my moves)
  5. Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
  6. Billy Woods - Aethiopes
  7. Rosalia - MOTOMAMI
  8. Jake Xerses Fussel - Good and Green Again
  9. FKA Twigs - CAPRISONGS
  10. Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!

It’s the top ten of the monthly polls (your five favourite of the month) that fed this list rather than the weekly release threads. You’ll almost always see new releases from bands that are big with the DiS demographics make an appearance in that monthly top ten because there are a lot of people who haven’t the time or the inclination to listen to tons of new artists all the time, so even if they didn’t love it somebody who posts to say they only listened to, say, the new National album, and thought it was ok, they’ve given it a 5 point boost over the rest of the field.
