DiS Users' July 2021 Album Of The Month - THE RESULTS

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

My choices:

1. Desperate Journalist - Maximum Sorrow!

2. Midwife - Luminol

3. The Goon Sax - Mirror II

4. Anika - Change

5. Mega Bog - Life, And Another

The new Desperate Journalist album was a brilliant slow burner (for me anyway). On the first few listens there wasn’t the obvious big indie rock bangers as their previous but after repeated listens the songs broke through. Everything You Wanted and Was It Worth It? rank amongst their best big hitter and this new might work better as an album than their others.
Brilliant album although I’ve been a big fan for years and so I’m biased.

Hadn’t heard of Midwife before this release. Love the style. Not sure who she reminds me of…maybe a bit of Soap&Skin but the sparse distanced repetitive shouty angry vocals over the electro pop/rock is great. Easily my favourite new artist of the month.

The Goon Sax album with Robert Forster’s son was a good one and reminded me of The Boggs if anyone remembers them.

Enjoyed Anika and Mega Bog albums although they might be pushed up my list with further repeat listens.

Looking forward to albums tomorrow from Yola, Torres and LUMP.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 8th August so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Still need to investigate Midwife. Anika, Maja Lena, Dusted and yes/and bubbling under

I’ll change mine to:

  1. Desperate Journalist

  2. Torres - Thirstier

  3. Midwife

  4. The Goon Sax

  5. Anika

The new Torres album is brilliant. Not as good as Sprinter but that’s a high bar for anyone. The new one reminds me a lot of the latest Du Blonde album. They’ve a similar sound.

Torres has grown on me hugely. So goes in at 2 now please. Everyone else shifts down a place

I’ve enjoyed July a lot.

  1. Museum of Love - Life of Mammals
  2. LUMP - Animal
  3. Mega Bog - Life, And Another
  4. Midwife - Luminol
  5. Drug Store Romeos - The World Within Our Bedrooms

Museum of Love is new to me. One half of LCD Soundsystem. One review described it as Scott Walker meets LCD Soundsystem meets krautrock.

6.The Goon Sax - Mirrors II
7. Torres - Thirstier
8. DARKSIDE - Sprial
9. Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp - We’re OK. But We’re Lost Anyway

Have a feeling that Torres will go up with more plays.

It’s now my album of the month. Just for transparency I’ll be swapping Torres as my top pick with Desperate Journalist now second.

The Torres album is brilliant. I thought she might not be able to top Sprinter but after repeated listens (I’ve not been listening to much else) it might be better.
