Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.
Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.
My choices:
1. Cassandra Jenkins - My Light, My Destroyer
2. Remi Wolf - Big Ideas
3. Los Campesinos - All Hell
Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked. Not sure what’s out tomorrow. I’ll see what you guys are listening to.
Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 4th August and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.
Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.
In a month where I was excited about pretty much nothing, and I spent most of listening to the Mica Levi single and FKA Boursin EP on a loop, actually found 5 remarkable albums… SML is a tiny cheat, came out 28th June, but wasn’t on streaming until mid July.
1: Total Blue: Total Blue
2: Xylitol: Anemones
3: SML: Small Medium Large
4: Zuli: Lambada
5: Antonina Nowacka: Sylphide Soporifera
Summary
Just fallen in love with the Total Blue record. The kind of tasteful thing I’d normally baulk at, but it’s so well done and just perfect summer haze music. Gorgeous. Xylitol is… not gorgeous - although it kinda is in it’s own way - reminds me a lot of Aphex Twin in it’s brutal / beautiful machine contrasts. Really goes but doesn’t leave a tune behind for long. FFO Skee Mask too. SML is the first Jeremiah Chiu record I’ve really clicked with, but had it on loop - taken from live recordings then cut up in really interesting ways and stitched back together as if the electronics are another member of the band - feels like a really new, modern Jazz record, which I’m properly behind. Zuli, meanwhile, sounds hollowed out, warped, not what I expected from him, but really of it’s time. Great heat music in the opposite way to Total Blue, in that it’s agitating. And Antonina Nowacka is an etheral, beautiful thing… summer evening music. I don’t go on the ambient thread much, but most of this would be riiiiight at home on there. Stunners, the lot of them.
Oh - and here’s that FKA Boursin, which is my favourite thing this month. DJ Sprinkles-esque. So so good.
Respire - Hiraeth
Immortal Nightbody - Passion Scale
Julia-Sophie - forgive too slow
Childish Gambino - Bando Stone
Cassandra Jenkins - My Light, my Destroyer
