DiS Users' June 2019 Album Of The Month

VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!
VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!

I’ve often wanted to award points to my 4th and 5th favourites especially on strong months for releases and wasn’t able due to my own rules and they end up as honourable mentions.

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked.

My choices:
1. Bruce Springsteen - Western Stars
2. Mannequin Pussy - Patience
3. Aurora - A Different Kind Of Human (Step 2)
4. Bedouine - Bird Songs Of A Killjoy
5. Stef Chura - Midnight
6. Black Midi - Schlagenheim.
7. Hatchie - Keepsake

I wasn’t expecting such a strong album by Springsteen. Very My Hometown-esque than his big rock hits.
Mannequin Pussy reminds me of the stuff I’d love in the late 90s.
Aurora’s new one is just fun.
Bedouine is perfect to put on on the way home after a few drinks. Very soothing.
Stef Chura is very good too. Never heard of her before the recent reviews. Worth checking out.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 7th July and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

Struggled a bit this month. Was buzzing for new Bill Callahan but haven’t been able to get into it. Feels too long. In terms of what I’ve returned to most I’ll go:-

  1. Hatchie
  2. Bruce Springsteen
  3. Hot Chip

I’ll do an Album Of Jan-June 2019 after the votes are in for this month.

It’ll be choices from the albums voted in the top 10 in the AOTM threads. I don’t have the time to do a huge free vote as in the end of year poll.

  1. Freddie Gibbs/Madlib - Bandana
  2. Vanishing Twin - The Age of Immunology
  3. Hot Chip - A Bathful of Ecstasy
  4. Baroness - Gold and Grey
  5. Black Midi - Schlagenheim

Another solid month. Loved the Bill Callahan album at first but didn’t find myself returning to it very much. Black Midi May go up or down - still getting to grips with it.

Hmm. Reckon that’s it, this month.

  1. Andavald - Undir Skyggðarhaldi (another potential AOTY)
  2. Eskapism - Ancient Songs of the Wind
  3. The Austerity Program - Bible Songs I
  4. Ashbringer - Absolution
  5. The Appleseed Cast - The Fleeting Light Of Impermanence

Still need to listen to that Yellow Eyes album.

  3. Otoboke Beaver - ITEKOMA HITS
  4. Bill Callahan - Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest

A few things I still haven’t got to this month but probably won’t make it to in the next few days and so as at now my list is…

  1. Hot Chip
  2. Divine Comedy
  3. Bruce Springsteen
  4. Kate Tempest

So not many new artists that I’ve delved into this month but a good month for established acts releasing stuff that I found pleasantly surprising in different ways. Hot Chip a clear number 1 though. Stunning album - their best yet in my view and possible AOTY contender for me (and whilst I’ve always quite liked them I’ve not been a mega fan before but this one is just superb).

  1. Old Amica - Taiga
  2. The Divine Comedy - Office Politics
  3. Meursault - Crow Hill
  4. Nev Cottee - River’s Edge
  5. Wasuremono - Are you OK?

Freddie Gibbs/Madlib is great. Best hip hop album I’ve heard in quite a while.

How do you rate its chances of reaching the top ten in this poll?

Not too high, given some big indie releases this month.
