Listened to this a couple times this week and its really nice. Nice full sound and really pretty melodies folded in with crunchy guitar and hard hitting drums.

Have so much to catch up on this month, those three are all excellent

Another strong month - fewer than May but probably overall of a higher quality

  1. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
  2. Coriky - Coriky
  3. Bob Dylan - Rough and Rowdy Ways
  4. Muzz - Muzz
  5. HAIM - Women in Music Part III

Closely followed by
Nadine Shah - Kitchen Sink
SAULT - Untitled (Black Is)
Jess Williamson - Sorceress
Khruangbin - Mordechai
Ray LaMontagne - Monovision

Run The Jewels is not really my thing but I recognise its quality.

I’m still absorbing the Dylan and Shah and expect both will rank higher after future listens.

1. HAIM - Women in Music Part iii

Probably going to be my AOTY, or at least give ol’ Perfume Genius a run for his money. If anyone has written off these ladies then go back for this, it is astonishingly good. Great to hear them expand beyond the classic rock sound they perfected on their first album and move into a more playful direction.

2. RTJ - RTJ4

Did this really come out this month? Feels like a different world when it was released. Anyways, timely and boisterous, it is a hell of a rebound after the slightly lacklustre and overlong last album.

3. Bob Dylan - Rough and Rowdy Ways

One of those late career albums where a towering icon pushes themself and grapples with their legend (see Blackstar and You Wanted it Darker for instance). Just great to hear Bob so engaged, can imagine the Dylanologists having a field day. I just wish he had released it this time last year, would have been great to see him perform them in Hyde Park, and would have given that performance some focus.

4. Kate NV - Room for the Moon

Was a recommendation from the weekly release thread (thanks!) and is exactly the kind of off-kilter experimental-pop that I love.

5. Gia Margeret - Mia Gargaret

Another recommendation from the weekly release thread, lovely and hypnotic short compositions. Had never listened to her stuff with vocals before, so it is strange that she is primarily a singer, but look forward to delving in.

Flirted with also including Pottery - Welcome to Bobby’s Motel, it is super derivative (do you think they listen to Talking Heads?) but I can see myself going back to it a lot for fun (especially when running).

Also need to give more time to Jessie Ware - What’s Your Pleasure?, from cursory listens I can tell its totally my kind of thing but it is not sinking in… blame HAIM.

  1. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
  2. Strand of Oaks - Ambient for Change

Very underwhelmed by stuff I “should” like or stuff I’ve liked in the past (No Age, Muzz, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Modern Nature, Built to Spill, Hum, Nadine Shah), but hopefully at least one of them will click with more time.

I like the new Phoebe Bridgers album - I think if it hadn’t been for the expectations, people would overall be higher on it. I really like how the title track unfolds:

People are sleeping on Strand of Oaks’ uncharacteristic ambient album. Not sure what else to say about it other than it’s great and people should listen to it.

Hard to order, but lots of music this month!

  1. Evening Hymns - Heavy Nights
  2. Kamaniu Silelis - 9
  3. Braids - Shadow Offering
  4. Skott - Always Love For Always

SAULT - Untitled (Black Is)
Tenci - My Heart Is An Open Field

Vilde - Atopia
Drab City - Good Songs For Bad People

  1. Braids - Shadow Offering (my AOTY, so far)
  2. Jessie Ware - What’s Your Pleasure?
  3. Westerman - Your Hero Is Not Dead
  4. Immigrant Union - Judas
  5. Photay - Waking Hours

1. Nadine Shah - Kitchen Sink
2. Run The Jewels - RTJ4
3. Momma - Two Of Me
4. City Girls - City On Lock
5. Braids - Shadow Offering

I’ve changed mine with Nadine Shah being my top pick. Gets better with each listen. Might be even better than her last album.

Totally agree re Nadine Shah. Bits of the record left me a bit a bit cold at first but it’s really getting under my skin. Haven’t paid close attention to the lyrics yet but loads of intriguing lines jumping out at me. Also think the back half of the record is where a lot of the real gems are.
