DiS Users' March 2017 Album Of The Month

Just started listening to Blanck Mass on the strength of this thread. Sounds good, but the beginning of the first track really reminds me of:

great month

  1. Jacaszek - Kwiaty

  2. Planning for Burial - Below the House

  3. David Bazan - Care

  4. Oisseux Tempete - Al-'AN!

  5. Saltland - A Common Truth

  6. Grandaddy - Last Place

I think i share a similar opinion on A Crow Looked at Me to to others here, itā€™s deep and beautiful, stunning even but itā€™s also a primal scream that itā€™s very hard to not be consumed by, and it leaves me to hollow to say I enjoy it or to want to repeat the experience.

scratch oiseaux (correct sp) and it shouldnā€™t be in there itā€™s had a delayed release till april.

Good to see Idles in abouts. Pretty sure Brutalismā€™s going to be my number one

Almost silly how many albums Iā€™ve liked this month which means i really havenā€™t given enough time to assess properly - top 3 are really the ones Iā€™ve had most chance to listen to.

  1. Grandaddy - Last Place
  2. Sarah Davachi - All My Circles Run
  3. Kelly Lee Owens - S/T

Also really enjoyed:
Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me
Anjou - Epithymia
Mario Batkovic - S/T

& have only given cursory listen to but looking forward to
Abul Mogard/Maurizio Bianchi - Nervous Hydra/All this has passed
Tape Loop orchestra - Held Against the light
Daniel Brandt - Eternal Something

That French Press EP is great

  1. Spoon
  2. Horsebeach
  3. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

Unlike some others I think this has been a disappointing month, although to be fair I havenā€™t got round to the Freddie Gibbs record yet and Iā€™m waiting for my (horribly expensive) vinyl copy of Mount Eerie.

Big disappointment for me was the Magnetic Fields. Fascinating concept but very few songs that work outside of that. Probably 6 or 7 really good songs out of the 50.

  1. Onra - Chinoiseries Part 3
  2. Freddie Gibbs - You Only Live 2wice
  3. Charli XCX - Number One Angel

Perhaps Iā€™ve missed some things as I canā€™t remember listening to a lot this month (might just be a quiet listening month), but these three are probably the ones Iā€™ve enjoyed most.

Grandaddy - Last Place

Been really behind this month, so was catching up on loads of these records today. The Idles, Hater, Desperate Journalist & Valerie June albums were all fantastic!

Going to spend a bit more time with these whilst also checking out a few others already mentioned in this thread.

Valerie Juneā€™s album is brilliant. It puts a smile on my face. That says a lot as Iā€™m otherwise a grumpy cynical old bastard.

Her voice kinda reminds me of Karen Dalton or Cat Power and the albums pace nicely suited a Spring afternoon. And youā€™re not alone, it really put me in a great mood too!

Whatā€™s your favourite track? Are you familiar with the rest of her catalogue?

I was just looking to see the new releases on my Google Play subscription a few weeks ago and I liked her album cover and so thought Iā€™d check her out. A lucky and chance discovery. I bought a ticket for her Scala gig in a few weeks but unfortunately canā€™t make her Rough Trade East gig due to work commitments.

Just In Time is a brilliant track and my favourite and Got Soul is a great finale to the album.

Agree with you exactly about the magnetic fields album. Only listened once so far, but in my experience you either like a magnetic fields song or you donā€™t, they donā€™t do growers. So I donā€™t see my opinion shifting.

  1. Laura Marling

First Laura Marling album Iā€™ve ever heard, like an album with a highfalutin concept, itā€™s very good

The problem is that a lot of it only works if you listen to the whole thing together, and thatā€™s a big commitment in time. There are very few songs that work well enough for you to want to listen to on their own.

Itā€™s an impressive piece of work but I admire it a lot more than I like it.

Yes, completely agree. 69 Love Songs worked because of the universality of it, whereas the specificity of the new album really bogs it down, apart from on a handful of tracks like you say
