Welcome to the longest running monthly episodic thread in Drowned In Sound history. This thread is now in its 10th year. I clearly have nothing better to do than to count up your favourite albums each month for a decade now
VOTE FOR YOUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS!!
Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.
Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.
My choices:
1. Lana Del Rey - Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd
2. Jen Cloher - I Am The River, The River Is Me
3. The Red, Pinks and Purples - The Town That Cursed Your Name
4. Shana Cleveland - Manzanita
5. Shalom - Sublimation
A pretty good month.
Lana Del Rey does her thing again on an album that’s over 1¼ hours long. Not sure what the strongest song is…maybe Kintsugi, nor not sure what’s the weakest song as the whole album flows very very well. If you make a lengthy grand album like this you’re allowed those interludes and they work and fit in. A brilliant album and easily AOTM for me but…Norman Fucking Rockwell remains perhaps the best record released in the last decade for me.
Heard a new Jen Cloher track on the radio maybe a few months ago and I wasn’t convinced as I didn’t like what I thought was her new style. I’m glad to be corrected as usual. It’s a far bolder record than any of her previous and it’s sung both in English and Māori. I thought her self titled album from 2017 was brilliant and this one might come close to that with the title track being one of the many stand outs.
The Red, Pinks and Purples do their jangly pop again. Nice but unfortunately not in the same league as Uncommon Weather which was my top album of 2021.
Enjoyed Shana Cleveland and Shalom, the latter whom I hadn’t heard of until a mate sent me a link.
Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked. Not sure what else is out tomorrow so I’ll see what you guys come up with.
Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 9th April and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases if there’s anything out before choosing.
Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.
