DiS Users' May 2019 Album Of The Month

I’ve often wanted to award points to my 4th and 5th favourites especially on strong months for releases and wasn’t able due to my own rules and they end up as honourable mentions.

Vote for your favourite five albums. Make your selections clear please as it makes tallying up the scores easier. If you list a whole bunch of albums without making your selections clear I’ll take the first five mentioned as 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th and 5th. No joint positions please. Sorry to be a pedant.

Your album of the month will get five points, 2nd placed album four points, 3rd placed album three points, 4th placed album two points and 5th one point. If you name only one album I’ll give that five points. If you name two albums I’ll score them with five and four points etc. You get the message.

Always a lot of great recommendations from you guys about albums that I’ve missed or overlooked.

My choices:

  1. ?
  2. ?
  3. ?
  4. ?
  5. ?

I’ll have a think and will post later. Just wanted to kick this thread out on time. I enjoyed Big Thief but not as much as many others. I really liked Cate Le Bon and the Honeyblood album was good too. Looking forward to Pip Blom and Sarah Davachi tomorrow. Good month overall.

Please forgive any shameless bumps of this thread during the week. I’ll keep this thread open until Sunday 9th June and so you’ll have over a week to listen to tomorrow’s releases before choosing.

Vote now!! (Or later in the week) but make your choices clear please.

It’s a pretty rare month where I’ve even listened to five new albums, let alone 5 new ones released that month, let alone 5 new albums released that month that I like enough to consider including them in a top 5 AOTM…

  1. Madonnatron — Musica Alla Puttanesca
  2. Operators — Radiant Dawn
  3. Charly Bliss — Young Enough

Nah. Still not gonna make it. Could pad it out with things like Alex Lahey, Empath, Honeyblood and Piroshka (yes, actually listened to 6 new albums released this month) but none of them have sufficiently grabbed me to the point of wanting to listen to them often enough to be able to include them in a top 5.

Tyler- IGOR
Earth - Full Upon her Burning Lips
Mac DeMarco - here comes the cowboy
Sebadoh- Act Surprised

actually gonna have a top five this month! Six I’ve enjoyed already and a few I’m interested in out tomorrow. Big Thief will be top though

Can we do a top 10? Already pissed off at the thought of choosing

Just the three this month, U.F.O.F. has been a huge album for me, so that dominated my listening. Thoroughly enjoyed the other two though:

Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
Kedr Livanskiy - Your Need
Holly Herndon - Proto

So much good this month, this is tricky

1-Patience - Dizzy Spells
2-The Reds, Pinks & Purples - Desperate Parties (ep)
3-Cate Le Bon - Reward
4-The Ballet - Matchy Matchy
5-The Pinheads - Is This Real

  1. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
  2. Cate Le Bon - Reward
  3. The National - I Am Easy To Find
  4. Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
  5. Operators - Radiant Dawn

Good month, although ultimately disappointed by some of the bug releases

  1. Big Thief - UFOF

  2. The Glow - Am I

  3. Barrie - Happy To Be Here

  4. Erland Cooper - Sule Skerry

  5. Holly Herndon - PROTO

  6. Morabeza Tobacco - S/T

  7. Juan Wauters - Introducing Juan Pablo

  8. Sacred Paws - Run Around The Sun

  9. Gemma - Feelings Not A Tempo

  10. Patience - Dizzy Spells

Also enjoyed Madonnatron, Dehd, Charly Bliss, Dead Horse Beats and Hayden Thorpe. Totally underwhelmed by The National and Vampire Weekend, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to them.

EDIT: no idea why it’s formatted that like it is.

  2. Sarah Davachi - Pale Bloom
  3. The National - I am Easy to Find
  4. Craig Leon - Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 2
  5. ann annie - wander into

Didn’t know he had anything out! Ho Ho ho.

what were you disappointed by?

ah sorry - National & Vampire

Enough amazing music for a whole year tbh. Too much to rank properly so this is more sort of what I’ve listened to most so far (be surprised if Sarah Davachi doesn’t end up in my year end Top 10):

1, Holly Herndon - Proto
2. Caterina Barbieri - Ecstatic Computation
3. Tim Hecker - Anoyo
4. She Keeps Bees - Kinship
5. Cate Le Bon - Reward

Sarah Davachi
Sarah Davachi & Ariel Kalma
Ekin Fil
Kassel Jaeger
Josephine Wiggs
Kate Carr (EP)
Chernobyl OST
Resina Traces Remixes

Haven’t listened to Skepta yet but I really like Konnichiwa so probably should have before posting and also need to check out Dave and almost certainly other stuff this thread throws up.

Have you listened to the Slowthai album? Probably the best of the bunch in an excellent year for British hip hop (although the Dave and Little Simz records are great too).
