Hachiku was a late discovery for me, maybe from a Spotify playlist, so I dont think I mentioned it in the weekly releases. It was a great surprise, and sounds like an Icelandic version of Soko (although maybe she’s German), and Perfume Genius and CocoRosie (so says Spotify anyhow, so that’ll do for me). Great album. I thought it would be my favourite.

But then I had a proper listen to Ane Brun’s album today, and then played it most of the day. I liked an old song of hers, but was a bit disappointed with her earlier album this year. This one is beautiful though, her voice is so lovely and the music is so great too. Not sure why it took a while for it to click with me.

TSHA was a discovery from the weekly threads, so thank you to whoever that was! Only four songs on it, and I wasn’t expecting to like it, but two (or three or four?) of the songs are just so catchingly good.

Tiña sort of has Porridge Radio vibes? Mixed with Wasuremono and Elf Power. Had a good time listening to it last weekend.

And this Babybird album (which I pre-ordered on cd a few months ago) is actually really good. He still seems a bit hit and miss with all of his many releases, but this one is good.

That was me! I’d heard the single Sister before, which was absolutely up my street so was very much lookng forward to the rest of the EP, which didn’t disappoint.

I don’t know Hachiku or Tiña but both sound like my kinda thing, so thanks for the recommendations!

After posting this list, I then came across this excellent French chap, Dominique A, on Spotify last night. I’ve had one listen through the album so far, but am pretty confident it would easily be in my top five, possibly at the top. Lovely voice and the music and songs sound great. Definitely worth a listen.

3. The Wytches - Three Mile Ditch
4. Marika Hackman - Covers

I loved Ane Brun’s covers of Big In Japan and The Dancers, but her own stuff seemed to be below par radio 2 easy listening type tracks and didn’t interest me at all.
You’re right though this new album is beautiful. Wish I’d heard it before I submitted my list.

  2. Seamus Fogarty - A Bag of Eyes

It’s a really good album, think it’s every bit as good as her last one. Would assume that it’s not getting as much promotion in English language media since she’s generally not singing in English on this one, but it’s full of great tunes.

Lots of great stuff in November, and frankly difficult to choose a top 5, but here’s my effort:

  1. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - KG
  2. Lambchop - Trip
  3. Tunng - Dead Club
  4. Ane Brun - How Beauty Holds the Hand of Sorrow
  5. Teho Teardo - L’alligatore

Lots of other great music this month, including:

Pole - Fading
Olafur Arnalds - Some Kind of Peace
Ana Roxanne - Because of a Flower
Marika Hackman - Covers
The Wytches - Three Mile Ditch
Katy J Pearson - Return
Dirty Projectors - 5 EPs
Keeley Forsyth - Photograph

Orchid Mantis - Far From This World
Badge Epoque Ensemble - Self Help
