Yeah, got a feeling I’ll be thinking the same this time next month.

Sorry to be a pain @BMS1 but can I edit mine to be:

  1. Ben LaMar Gay - Open Arms to Open Us
  2. JJJJJerome Ellis - The Clearing
  3. Color of Time - Color of Time
  4. Sarah Davachi & Sean McCann - Mother of Pearl
  5. Jake Muir - Mana

  1. Deap Vally - Marriage
  2. Joan As Police Woman, Tony Allen, Dave Okumu - The Solution Is Restless
  3. µ-Ziq & Mrs Jynx - Secret Garden
  4. Stealing Sheep and the Radiophonic Workshop - La Planète Sauvage
  5. Drum Pedro - Night Raven

Not much to choose between my favourites this month. Nothing massively standing out but quite a lot I’ve enjoyed. Any of these could easily have made my top 5 too:
Poppy Ackroyd - Pause
Bev Lee Harling - Little Anchor
Pejzaż - Noce i Dnie LP
Pip Blom - Welcome Break
Jessica Moss - Phosphenes
Emma Ruth Rundle - Engine of Hell

  3. Ovlov - Buds
  4. Leonie Pernet - Le Cirque de Consolation
  5. µ-Ziq & Mrs Jynx - Secret Garden

Most disappointing - Penelope Isles, found it very beige on a few listens. Perhaps I should revisit.

  3. Penelope Isles - Which Way to Happy
  4. Elbow - Flying Dream 1
  5. Ordnance Survey - Field Work

Really didn’t think I would be putting IDLES as number 1 after the last album. Or that it would be troubling my end of year list.

It’s a short write up for this month but still some great releases. Emo (apparently) and some great electronica.

1: Klein - Harmattan
2: Rosie Low & Duval Timothy - Son
3: Model Home - Both Feet En Th Infinite
4: Parris - Soaked in Indigo Moonlight
5: Jasss - A World of Service

All slightly flawed records, but each of them incredibly unique and really, really interesting. Top 3 might have started to bother my AOTY list, but need some time.

What about the new Black Dog record too? Something for you there?

I dunno. Will put it on now.

Hope you like it then, it’s been slim pickings this month. First heard their Music For Real Airports record via DiS and keep coming back to it.

There’s a nice review of the new one here. They had me at “gorgeous ambient music inspired by Sheffield’s brutalist architecture”

Listening to this now, really digging it.

  1. The Black Dog - Music For Photographers
Ken Downie’s Black Dog project has the ambient bug again and puts out a stunning album of beatless techno evoking urban landscapes, brutalist architecture and abstract photography.

  2. Pye Corner Audio - Entangled Routes
Martin Jenkins returns to Ghost Box with the third part of a trilogy he started with Stasis in 2016 and furthered with 2019’s Hollow Earth. A haunting album celebrating the mycelium network that connects all life.

  3. Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World (physical release)
Jaw-dropping maximalist synth-pop smashing together Madonna, vaporwave, K-pop, 80s electro, The Doobie Brothers, PC Music and even more things than I can possibly reference in a swoon-inducing melange.

  4. Jon Hopkins - Music For Psychedelic Therapy
Hopkins has also eschewed the beats he’s known for to craft an album that’s less ambient than field music designed to get high as fuck to. Could’ve been a bit of a disaster, actually ends up feeling rather meaningful.

  5. Polypores - Crystal Shop
Stephen James Buckley aka Polypores is a modular synth artist who thrives on improvisation. This album, made for boutique cassette label Waxing Crescent is a twinkly delight that feels like a journey in the dark of the deep, mineral earth.

  1. Hana Vu - Public Storage
  2. Snail Mail - Valentine
  3. Peakes - Peripheral Figures
  4. Summer Walker - Still Over It
  5. IDLES - Crawler

Think a lot of you are sleeping on this Hana Vu album (probably because of the artwork, which uh, yeah), but it’s a really solid female singer songwriter record with loads of synths and grungy guitars. FFO: Sharon Van Etten.

Keeper gets my pick for best of the poppier cuts, Gutter gets my pick for best of the harder cuts.

Yep, it’s really good! It seemed nice enough on my first listen, but then I seemed to keep going back to it and liked it more each time.
