I imagine people who listen to more music than me have expressed it more eloquently in many other threads but that Fontaines DC record is absolute bum.

I hear you. I liked Freedom so mine were maybe slightly higher

Glad to hear someone say that about FKA Twigs. Great that she’s taking it all in a new direction but it’s pretty specifically a non-sexy glossy direction that I’m not into. Bits of it reminded me of Madonna. She’s going to be huge if she carries on down that road and we can all say that we were into her before she was big so that’s something. And Fuck Sleep was good too. But man to me the new one is so soppy (emphasis on ‘to me’).

Fat White Family - Serfs Up

First 2 singles were brilliant, 3rd was good, really positive reviews, was sure they were going to kick it up a notch after the patchily brilliant ‘Songs For Our Mothers’… turned out to be limp, overproduced, and with few memorable tunes.

They were so ace live though and a few of the album tracks (‘fringe runner’ especially) worked much better in that environment.

but on this one it feels like they took all the (incorrect) cliches I’ve been defending them against from people for the last 15 years, and wrapped them into this absolute turkey of an album.

doesn’t exist

The National I can kind of forgive as it’s an experiment for them (although it’s more than time for them to stomp into a back to basics album), Kanye was kind of expected but sad when you think of his backlist, M83 just nothing, Vampire Weekend disposable nice enough tunes but weightless - seems Rostam was the guy there giving it all the gravity and atmosphere that made it so special.

Chance just a total disaster that might cost him his place at the head table. He’s delayed, discounted, buy one ticket get one free’d, and finally cancelled his ludicrously ambitious arena tour, probably losing a packet in the process. Not seen such a hostile reaction to an an artist with a lot of accrued good will in a while - but he has become quite preachy, quite egotistical and increasingly unlikeable. Big Day was painful for me, but I know some here seemed to like it.

‘Disappointing’ is not the same as ‘bad’ of course. The Angel Olsen album is obviously a good record but it left me a bit cold for some reason and, given how much I was looking forward to it, definitely my most disappointing of the year.

Black Marble

Lost a member and seem to have ditched the icy. gothic aesthetic which were their mainly selling point in the first place. Now the songs are just fairly pleasant.

Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
Kevin Morby - Oh My God
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising

In that order. I love all their previous records but these ones have been nowhere near as good as the albums that came before them yet have had more critical acclaim heaped on them for some reason… I feel a bit harsh putting Weyes Blood on there but following the marvellous Front Row Seat To Earth it just feels “disappointing”.

Sleater-Kinney is maybe the most disappointing album of the decade for me. I love both them and St Vincent, and the thought of her producing their album made me giddy, but the final product ranged from ‘meh’ to bad.

I only really got into Lizzo at the start of the year, but that album was quite rubbish given how many bangers she has made previously

Hatchie — Keepsake

Loved the EP and was really looking forward to the album, but it’s a big disappoint. The overall sound and production is still there, but the songs/melodies are all a bit meh.

I should probably have had a “controversial opinion warning” at the start, as quite a few have counted it among their top 5.

far too long but stronger than the last one imo (though not as strong as the handful before that)

reckon if I’d never heard them before I’d still find it a proper face melter of an album but when you release a face melter every single year then i guess some are going to be face meltier than others

Most overrated band/album of the year by some distance.

Big Thief’s UFOF still bores me to tears and is easily my biggest disappointment of the year, particularly coming after ‘Capacity’.

Runner up was Panda Bear. I’m still not convinced I have the same album as everyone else. Mine feels like it’s missing loads of instruments. And songs.
