In terms of appetite there’s some for Fantasy - the success of the Middle Earth trilogies, Harry Potter and GoT are testament to this. Most of the big franchise stuff of the last quarter century has been Fantastical if not strictly Fantasy - Star Wars, Super Heroes, Stranger Things etc
There is no audience for MotU, beyond about ten thousand manbabies aged 45-55 including Jeff Bezos. There is no audience for Willow either, it did OK in the late 80s and there’s moderate nostalgia for it I guess. It limps on as a minor cult film at best I’d imagine. I’ve heard mixed negative things about the series, I don’t know that it would have been a success even if it had been brilliant. Fantasy and the Fantastic are everywhere and with high budgets, there’s just too much stuff.
This repackaging of Gen X and older Millenial properties was going to succumb to self cannibalization sooner or later and we are now seemingly there. Some stuff will survive, most of what does will have a smaller market share. As has been pointed out, if you don’t make new stuff, you won’t have anything to reboot, sequelize, remake etc in the future.
Audiences have roundly rejected Mondo, Supergirl and seemingly Moana and the latest Evil Dead now. MotU too but that anyone could see that coming. That Harry Potter series does feel like the ouroboros swallowing itself and like some kind of franchise cynicism singularity.
Hopefully we get more New Shit from now on.
