The Banshees Of Inisherin - really good, deserved all the plaudits it got, excellent dynamic between the main two and probably the best Barry Keoghan performance (or equal with American Animals). Not near my top 50 though
Spider-Man into the Spider verse - stunning piece of work, as good as animation has ever been imho. Literally took my breath away at times. And just a really good version of this story that manages not to feel reheated and boring after how many diff versions we’ve had over the years. My no. 24, though the first Raimi one got up to my no. 17 I think
Get Out - great stuff, but needs a rewatch as I think I’m affected by The Narrative and impact of this one more than its qualities as a film in its own right. But clearly good and Important to modern cinema
Memento - fuck yeah, best Nolan by far to this day and one of the best uses of non-linear storytelling. Actually felt justified and like it added to the film (even on rewatches) rather than just being a gimmick. To get peak Pearce and Pantoliano and once is chef’s kiss. My no. 9
Shaun of The Dead - funny, haven’t seen in ages, would like a rewatch. Dylan Moran is the best part of it
Let The Right One In - weirdly underwhelmed by this, never got the acclaim. May need a rewatch
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - remember it fondly as a great time and spectacle. Was well over 10 years ago though so it’s pretty hazy
The Raid - hell yeah, what a great action flick. Pretty flawless for what it is
Tár - Really good stuff, standout film of that year for me. Exactly what I want from arty-but-accessible stuff, bold funny highbrow silly. The scene with her stomping around with the accordion to piss off the neighbours is great.
I’m very happy Michelle got an Oscar for EEAAO (good performance and probs lifetime recognition as well) but Cate should have run away with it for me, astonishing perfectly engrossing character. Loved loved the ending and how you could read it as a failure or as freedom. Just snuck into my list as my no. 50
Almost Famous - just just missed my list, in my top 55 maybe. Just a great coming of age story with a big cast of characters you’re rooting for, shaggy hangout vibes, heart, love for the art form. A ball, could see this being the favourite film of another version of me
