Think there’s only one album I’ve properly loved this year that came out this year and that was the Kozelek spoken word one, and he’s in the bin as they say.

Thought the Morning [A] Blackstar album was pretty great, that came out this year.

Apologies if I have already replied to this effect before, but I have been listening to this loads since you posted and it is fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing.

Crikey, this is excellent. If this is their idea of a throwaway album I cant wait to hear the proper one.

Probably the rock record with the largest number of massive hooks this year. Sløtface pair noisey guitars with catchy choruses and the kind of poignant lyrics that’ll be perfect to bellow along to in a sweat box if gigs are ever allowed to happen again. Reckon if you like the Dogleg album recommended by @Aggpass above, Japandroids, or Cloud Nothings’ more tuneful numbers you’ll have a whale of a time with this one.

Team Picture - The Menace of Mechanical Music

Dream-pop/rock from up North that seems to have been largely overlooked. Traces of Wild Beasts, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins.

We’ve already had (Rise) up the thread but this is a notable exception from the thread:

SAULT - Untitled (Black Is)

Four strong albums in two years is ridiculous, but this one is one gets the nod in the AOTY running for me; it is extremely strong musically (let’s tag it in the protest soul genre) and entirely on point with the political message in the year the Black Lives Matter movement became one of the stories of the year.

The tender defiance of Wildfires surely in the running for the song of the year.

Thief in the night
Tell the truth
White lives
Spreading lies
You should be ashamed
The bloodshed on your hands
Another man
Take off your badge
We all know it was murder
Murder, murder
Murder

We are dying, it’s the reason we are crying
We are crying

But we will never show fear
Even in my eyes
I will always rise
In wildfires
I ain’t never been scared
Even through my tears
I will always care
In wildfires

I absolutely loved this record but for some reason I thought it was last year! Going to have to revise my top 5 list now

An Autumn For Crippled Children - All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet

Ignore the cringeworthy band name as this is some top quality blackgaze. Shoegaze melodies with the screamed vocals lower in the mix so it’s not too abrasive. Give it a go if you’re a fan of Alcest, Deafheaven, Mol, that kind of thing. Really nice album.

I like this one. They were my first cancelled gig of corona season, should have seen them in a tiny room back in March.

Sorry to hear that. That would have been a great evening.

Sylvan Esso - Free Love

One more from me as I haven’t seen this mentioned much plus wanted to rectify the fact I messed up the polls on the last ones I posted. Really loved this album (put it as my #4 in my end of year list) - electronic pop, with a bit more of a downbeat vibe than their last couple but I think it’s my fave of theirs yet.

Think I’m on my own but I prefer Rise to this.

both are good though!

It’s pretty close going by the polls here, currently 8.42 on Black Is and 8.22 on Rise. And if I took my own votes out of the count (10 and 7 respectively) they’re almost neck and neck.

Have enjoyed this album a lot more than previous Sylvan Esso efforts. The sparse style really suits them.

Nope I think Rise is the better album Black Is has the better songs basically Wildfires.

ok, I’m going to do a few now I think.

Delmer Darion - Morning Pageants

Description from Bandcamp:
“A vast aural landscape is covered from the opening melodies coded in the constructed language of Solresol. When sequenced together, ‘Morning Pageants’ is shrouded in the same intricate noise of self-sampling and tape degradation. De-centred rhythmic assemblies of analogue drum machines play through a series of guitar pedals, thunderous bass swells from a self oscillating filter feedback patch, and folk songs dissolve into thin air.”

Brossier is one of my favourite songs of the year, especially when the vocals are properly released in the second half of the song. Such a great different sounding album.
