Depends how you class a friend really. I feel like I have enough for me.

My sister would probably say she has 200 friends. She moans about the lot of them.

I feel happier with my situation.

I have a close friend who has billions of friends. Knows absolutely everyone. She’s just really good at talking to and making connections with people. Makes it very difficult to be her friend sometimes as you feel you’re always competing for her attention. I don’t think it makes her happy.

Dated someone like this for a while, was exhausting

Were they an only child?

Dunno

Great, thanks.

actually thinking about it my first pwopa gf (3+ years) was like this too. yeah really fucking exhausting and kinda terrible for self confidence as well.

I’m intrigued by this, why so?

Also what age do you mean by ā€˜older’?

Yeah I see people like this and just think their lives must be exhausting - phones going off every 3 seconds with invites to stuff and rushing around everywhere trying to see a million different people, its not for me Clive.

The idea of moving abroad is too stressful. Would have no idea how to make friends.

Well for the purposes of ā€˜older’ here I’ll use a nebulous sense of ā€˜being mid-30s’ and over. I dunno I spent my 20s with the main motivation of my life being sociable and going out and that. As a result you sort of hoover up a lot of new friends. When you get older you’re more likely to get married/have a long-term relationship, focus more on your career and have children. Also I’ve found I have a lot less energy to go out loads etc. As a result you spend less time socialising and maintaining friendships becomes tricky. And it becomes political and becomes a pain in the arse. And you also learn more about what a Friend ACTUALLY is.

I mean if you only see someone once/twice a year - how good a friend are they really?

As a result I genuinely think I have too many friends. I avoided saying this earlier in case someone saw that as a humblebrag. It really isn’t.

one part of my life i’m v lucky. lots of pals to hang with thanks to work/staying close to uni and school friends

yeah like 7 or more , don’t see any of them often though

As logical as that may be, I’ve had a friend since P5, probably my closest in a sense, these days I only see once or twice a year but I’m so glad of him, within a couple of minutes we’ll be talking like it’s only been a day or two since we last saw him. I’d day he’s been a better friend to me than I have to him though.

I have 2 close girlfriends who I see fairly regularly and even that is a struggle to schedule time in with both.

I didn’t go to uni and I feel i’ve missed out on making loads of friends there. I was a bit too different from my school friends in that I am the only one still not living at home or 2 mins from their mum in Essex and going to the same nightclubs each week so we lost touch.

I am becoming more shy though so I don’t know how or if I will make more friends? I go to the gym every day and see the same people but can’t progress past ā€œhi, how are you? good thanksā€ and I don’t know why?? Everyone else is chatting together and having a nice time and I’m just standing there. But I think I come across as a moody bitch rather than shy.

Sure - but that’s one. It’s having, I dunno, 10 of them that’s the issue.

I think I’ve made this out to be worse than it is! It’s obviously not a huge problem - I was just responding to the OPs question about having ā€œa lotā€ of friends and saying ā€œmate - honestly you don’t need a lot, you really don’tā€.

Yeah I’m definitely moody a lot. Don’t mean to be, my face just falls that way.

That’s fine, I almost wasn’t going to reply because it doesn’t really matter if we think differently about it but I figured it’s just chat and that’s what we’re here to do so why not?
